Barcelona handed unexpected advantage in race to keep versatile defender

Joao Cancelo may have only arrived midway through the season, but the Portuguese defender has become one of the most important figures in Barcelona’s march towards the La Liga title.

And now that the celebrations are beginning to settle, Barcelona’s attention is turning towards the summer transfer window and squad planning.

This is where Cancelo’s name gathers the spotlight as his future remains unresolved beyond June.

The full-back joined the Catalan side on loan from Al Hilal during the January transfer window and made an immediate impact after arriving.

His energy, attacking intent and ability to operate on either flank gave Barcelona an extra dimension during the decisive months of the campaign.

More importantly, Cancelo brought balance to the side at a time when Barcelona needed experience and personality in difficult matches.
