COPPELL â Cole Koeninger was perfect for six innings on the mound and added two hits to lead Keller to a 6-0 Game 2 victory over Mansfield Lake Ridge and a sweep the best-of-3 Class 6A Division I bi-district baseball series Thursday night at Cowboys Field.
Koeninger got stronger as the game wore on, fanning the last nine hitters he faced and finishing with 14 strikeouts.
Connor Davenport came on to pitch the seventh inning.
âIt wasnât my call, I would have loved to come back out, but we wanted to get some work for another guy,ââ said Koeninger, headed to play college baseball at Tennessee unless his name is called early in the baseball draft.
âCole is as talented a player as Iâve had here,ââ said Rob Stramp, in his 28th season as head coach at Keller. âHeâs got a great chance to be big time. Heâs outstanding at shortstop and has only been pitching a short while.ââ
Asked his preference, Koeninger said he did love to hit, "so maybe I could do both.''
Lake Ridge put four balls in play against the right-hander, two ground balls and two fly balls.
Keller (32-2-2) is ranked No. 15 nationally and No. 1 in Texas by MaxPreps and No. 2 in the Class 6A area by The Dallas Morning News. The Indians, in the playoffs for the 24th consecutive season, advance to the area round against either El Paso Pebble Hills or Odessa Permian.
Keller swept Mansfield Lake Ridge with a 6-0 victory in Game 2, winning the best-of-3 series.
Cole Koeninger was the standout pitcher for Keller, achieving a perfect six innings and striking out 14 batters.

Lake Ridge (15-11-2), scoreless for the series, saw its streak of advancing out of the first round in its last five playoff appearances come to an end, but not before Luke Pelletier broke up the perfect game against Davenport with a two-out double to left.
Koeninger singled to open the game, Brock Burkett walked and both eventually scored on wild pitches for a 2-0 lead.
Keller widened it to 6-0 with a four-run third inning. Koeninger again started with a single and two walks loaded the bases. Logan Brown brought in the third run with a sacrifice fly, Jayden Moeller lined a two-run single to center and Cody Miller delivered a pinch-hit RBI double for the final run.
Lake Ridge got outstanding defensive play from shortstop Jaiden Lacour-Loyd.

Jesuit 3, Arlington Lamar 1 (Game 2): Jesuit wins the series 2-0 to advance to the area round. Texas signee James Jorgensen struck out 17 in a complete-game performance and improved to 6-0 as a starter. He allowed just one hit and four baserunners total via two walks and a batter hit-by-pitch. He had a no-hitter all the way into the seventh inning.
Jorgensen added a sac fly in the first frame and scored two runners before Nate Iannarielloâs single in the third to score the third. Jesuit will face either McKinney Boyd or Denton Guyer.
Hillcrest 8, Mesquite Poteet 2 (Game 2): Jayden Pescador struck out seven in Hillcrestâs series-clinching win over Poteet. Hillcrest advances to the area round after sweeping the first two games of the bi-district round. Pescardor also got things going for the team at the plate in the second frame scoring a run on a sacrifice fly.
South Grand Prairie 7, Irving MacArthur 3 (Game 2): South Grand Prairie advanced to the area round with a 2-0 series sweep in the bi-district round. Isaac Birtman went 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs in the contest.
MacArthur held a slim 3-1 lead after the bottom of the third but a four-run inning in the top of the fourth from South Grand Prairie, highlighted by Julian Guerreroâs sac fly that scored the go-ahead run, regained the lead for good for South Grand Prairie.
Sachse 7, Rockwall-Heath 5 (Game 2): Sachse advances to the area round with a 2-0 series win. Heath held a lead from the third inning until the bottom of the sixth when Sachse scored five runs, starting with Noah Siddallâs RBI single.
Jacob Ponce scored the go-ahead run on a line drive single before Greyson Darden added his third hit of the game on a line drive single as well.
Lovejoy 2, Whitehouse 0 (Game 1): Logan Corley pitched a complete game shutout with eight strikeouts and allowed just three hits. Zach Carlsonâs RBI double in the top of the fourth got Lovejoy on the board before Carson Branchâs sac fly in the top of the sixth scored the team's second run.
Waxahachie 11, Bryan 2 (Game 2 Postponed): Game was postponed in the top of the sixth due to lightning and will pick back up at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Waco Live Oak.
Boswell 6, Southlake Carroll 4 (Game 2), series tied 1-1: The series will go to a decisive Game 3.
Birdville 8, Granbury 1 (Game 2), series Tied 1-1: Series will go to a decisive Game 3 at Chisholm Trail High School at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Rowlett 6, Forney 5 (Game 2): Rowlett advances to the area round, winning the series 2-0.
Harker Heights 10, Cedar Hill 3 (Game 2): Â Harker Heights advances to the area round, winning the series 2-0.
