Barcelona edges Celta Vigo 1-0; Pedri shines after tough start

Freshman John Tedesco led Claremore to a 13-6 victory over Tahlequah, hitting 2 home runs and striking out 10 batters. Despite the win, Claremore fell short of the district title due to a tiebreaker with Pryor.
Freshman John Tedesco knew exactly what was at stake, and he didnât shy away from it.
With a district title still within reach, Tedesco delivered one of the most complete performances of the season Tuesday, blasting 2 home runs, driving in 4 runs and striking out 10 batters to lead Claremore to a 13-6 victory over Tahlequah at Legendary Legion Field at Murray-Pixley Park.
â[My mindset was] to go win and try to host regionals,â Tedesco said. âJust gotta keep on putting some work in. I just gotta do my job and help my team.â
The win capped a strong District 5A-3 run for the Zebras [20-10, 12-2], who finished tied atop the standings with Pryor and held a 96-93 edge in district points. However, the Tigers claimed the championship via tiebreaker thanks to an 8-7 point differential in last weekâs two-game series, with Claremore winning 5-4 in Game 1 before falling 4-2 in Game 2.
The second tiebreaker would have favored the Game 2 winner, meaning the odds were stacked against the Zebras entering Tuesday. The only path to a title required a Pryor loss to Collinsville, but the Cardinals fell 10-2, handing the Tigers the crown.
Still, Claremore will host a regional for the second-straight year with a chance to return to the state tournament for the second time since 2019.
âWe talk about small moments all year long, and you never know when theyâre going to happen,â Claremore coach Jonathan Gelnar said. âThe difference between first and second is a run. Thatâs a good analogy for life, I guess. We finished second, we host a regional and thatâs always a good feeling when you get to play regionals at home. Itâs fun to host, and weâve got a great park and the fans show up. Itâs fun, itâs a great time.â
Tedesco led the charge in the finale.
The freshman left-hander controlled the game on the mound, allowing 4 runs on 4 hits over 5 innings while striking out 10, and backed it up at the plate with home runs in the second and third innings.
He wasnât alone.
Brayden Floyd continued his historic season, driving in 2 runs to push his RBI total to 56 â a school record he broke last week [49] â with still five games remaining in the regular season. Braden Trail added 2 hits, while the Zebras totaled 12 hits and drew 6 walks in a balanced offensive effort.
âI didnât get to play much last year, so being able to come out and contribute for my team [means a lot to me],â Floyd said. âThankfully I have guys in front of me who get on a lot, and then I can do what I do best and score my teammates.
âIâve been a lot more confident this year, I know what Iâm good at and know I can do a lot of damage.â
After a scoreless first inning, Claremore broke the game open in the second.
Following a single and a walk, Tedesco launched a 3-run home run to center field to give the Zebras a 3-0 lead. Later in the inning, Trail added an RBI single, and Floyd followed with a 2-run double to stretch the advantage to 6-0.
John Tedesco hit 2 home runs, drove in 4 runs, and struck out 10 batters during the game.
Claremore finished tied for the top of the standings but lost the district title to Pryor due to a tiebreaker based on point differential.

The Zebras didnât let up.
Tedesco led off the third with his second home run of the game, a solo shot to right field. After a walk and stolen bases put runners in position, Kellen Gaede delivered a 2-run single to make it 9-0.
Jax Van Valkenburg added a sacrifice fly, and a pair of defensive miscues allowed another 2 runs to score, extending the lead to 12-0.
Tahlequah [13-15, 8-6] answered in the fourth.
After a pair of singles put runners on, Michael Torkelson drove in a run with a base hit. Later in the inning, Cutter Girdner delivered a 3-run double to cut the deficit to 12-4.
Claremoreâs pitching settled back in, though.
Tedesco struck out the side in the fifth to halt any momentum, and Ryder Garrison came on in relief in the sixth. The Tigers added a run on an RBI single by Girdner to make it 12-5.
The Zebras responded in the bottom half when after Luke Roberts reached and moved into scoring position, Xyler Reeder delivered an RBI single to push the lead to 13-5.
Tahlequah added a final run in the seventh on a double by Torkelson, but Claremore closed it out from there.
In the end, the Zebras did everything they needed to do. They won, and they did it convincingly.
It just wasnât quite enough for a district title.
Still, with momentum on their side and postseason baseball ahead, Claremore proved it has the pieces and the players to make another deep run.
â[Hosting regionals] is one of the goals of this group, and they accomplished Goal No. 1,â Gelnar said. âWhen we are rolling, weâre rolling pretty good, but great teams donât step off the gas pedal. Thatâs really going to be the conversation that we have with them [Wednesday]. Fundamental baseball wins in the playoffs â itâs not whoâs the most-talented team, itâs the team who executes the best.
âChampions donât take their foot off the gas pedal.â
