Former Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher A.J. Burnett will soon be back on the mound at PNC Park.
Burnett will throw a ceremonial first pitch ahead of Friday night’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays at 6:40 p.m. ET. The Pirates will celebrate the launch of their new City Connect uniforms, which will be worn for the first time during the game.
Burnett spent three seasons in Pittsburgh (2012-13, 2015) and went 35-28 with a 3.34 ERA in 87 starts. The right-hander led the Pirates to their fist playoff appearance since 1992 in his second year with the team. After joining the Philadelphia Phillies for the 2014 season, Burnett returned to the Pirates in 2015 and was named an All-Star for the first time in his career, again helping Pittsburgh get to the postseason.
Burnett, who retired following the 2015 season, spent several days with the Pirates at spring training in February as a mentor for pitchers.
