Hinano Bautista couldnāt do anything by herself, but she gave everything of herself again as the Mililani Trojans stifled Moanalua 9-3 to capture their third consecutive softball state championship.
Mililani now has six state championships, including five under Rose Antonio (2009, ā14, ā24, ā25, ā26). She got a healthy Gatorade shower from her team during the postgame celebration.
āThey got me. Iām soaked,ā she said. āIt was a very tough week for us playing four games. What else could you ask from this team? Iām very proud of them and our coaches who help prepare us.ā
Bautista overcame what she called a hitting slump recently. She broke out big this week. In the final, the junior southpaw went 3-for-3 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored in the biggest game of the season. In the circle, she allowed one earned run and seven hits over five innings. Taylor Adriano hurled the final two scoreless innings
Bautista finished the tournament with 11 hits in 16 at-bats (.688), with four homers, a triple, a double, 12 RBIs and five runs scored.
In the pitcherās circle, Bautista was 3-0 with a 3.50 ERA. In 16 innings, she struck out nine and walked eight. She was at her best under duress, tamping down Moanaluaās constant comeback attempts.
āItās just know that my team has my back through everything, through my ups and downs. They pick me up,ā Bautista said.
Shortstop Kahiau Aina sparked another stellar night for the Trojansā defense.
āFor sure, it feels better each time,ā she said of the three-peat. āI told Hinano, āAll you need is three up, three down.ā Thatās what she did. Itās really, everybody doubted us, said weāre overrated, this isnāt going to happen. We proved them wrong. Iām happy that we did.ā
Moanalua was chasing after a first state title.
āIām so proud of them,ā Na Menehune coach Kylee Oshiro said. āJust to get here is an accomplishment. To be the first is a big deal. Weāll keep growing and hopefully get back here some day.ā
Bautista had a slow start in the pitcherās circle, walking leadoff batter Jolie Ann Mochizuki on four pitches. Karah Pasion followed with a bloop single over first base. Mochizuki advanced to third base on Kaylah Satoās forceout grounder at second.
Alia Anzai followed with a ground single to right, scoring Mochizuki for a 1-0 Na Menehune lead. Bautista fanned Ramzy Bumagat and got Ava Atagi on a groundout to end the inning.
The Lady Trojans marched ahead with two runs in the bottom of the first against Moanaluaās most effective pitcher, Sato. Kamryn Aoki walked with one out, and on a 1-0 pitch, the left-handed hitting Bautista launched a rocket over left-center to give Mililani a 2-1 edge.
āJust trusting myself in the batterās box, that I can throw my hands out there, and on the mound. Itās all in my hands, really,ā Bautista said.

By the top of the second inning, Bautista found her groove. She needed just nine pitches to retire the side in order ā the same lower half of the lineup that troubled Campbell 24 hours earlier.
Aina led off the bottom of the third with a single and moved over to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Aoki. With the outfield playing close to the warning track, Bautistaās fly ball to center dropped in for a single.
Sato struck Emma Parker out, but Aubri Nakashimaās hard-hit grounder down the line caromed off the glove of the first baseman, Atagi, and into right field. Aina and courtesy runner Emry Alonzo scored to open Mililaniās lead to 4-1.
After Nakashima stole second base, she scored on Kaylie Kiharaās single to right for a 5-1 cushion.
Freshman Harper Fukuda replaced Sato in the pitcherās circle in the bottom of the fourth inning, when the Trojans scored three runs. Two of them were unearned due to a Moanalua error.
Fukuda plunked Kahoku Kahele, Aina reached on a fielding error by Pasion, and Aoki walked to load the bases.
Bautistaās towering pop fly down the right-field line landed in fair territory for a single, scoring Kahele for 6-1 Mililani lead.
Nakashimaās sacrifice fly to center brought Aina home for a seven-run margin. Lana Nakayama followed with a line drive single to center, scoring Aoki for an 8-1 lead.
Mililani and Moanalua were unseeded, teams that went from hot to cold during the OIA playoffs. Rather than fold, each team found its footing and played at peak level when the state championships began. Since losing to Campbell in the OIA semifinals, Mililani outscored its final five opponents by a combined score of 54-15.
