Overall, the first half was seemingly quite level but only the away side were able to take their chances with this being from the spot in a disputed penalty handball.
Köln's Jóhanesson received his fifth yellow card of the season in added time of the first half so he will miss the game against next week.
Bayer Leverkusen's victory against Köln significantly boosted their hopes of qualifying for European football.

After the half, Patrick Schick doubled the score for the away side as he slotted in a shot following a Nathan Tella assist.
