For the first time — maybe ever — Bayern Munich star winger Michael Olise was the most unpopular player on the pitch during his team’s 5-0 victory over St. Pauli.
After a first half battle with Joel Chima Fujita, Olise gave his opponent a little extra shove after the play, which put him firmly in the crosshairs of St. Pauli’s rabid fans. Later, St. Pauli supporters tossed some debris at Olise as he was leaving the pitch in the second half.
In between those events, though, Olise doubled down on the ill-will being directed at him by scoring and then motioning to the crowd, which only amplified things. Afterward, Bayern Munich board member for sport Max Eberl defended the Frenchman.
“He has emotions, he’s an incredibly good footballer and of course he always has to expect to be teased and annoyed. That was the running duel in the first half, where both players pulled each other, then came the emotions from St. Pauli fans. Michael was emotional, but I think he showed it with his performance on the pitch, and I think such emotions are part of a football game,” said Eberl (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
Sure, it got a little heated between Olise and fans, but this “incident” paled in comparison to some of the craziness we have seen in football over the years.
