Revealed: When John Stones will decide new club as Manchester City departure nears
Stones’ departure marks the end of an era at the Etihad Stadium for a player who reinvented himself as one of the most technically accomplished centre-backs in world football under Guardiola, winning a plethora of silverware at City and being the best player on the pitch, in his manager’s words, in his side’s UEFA Champions League final win over Inter Milan in 2023.
As reported by Caught Offside, Bayern Munich have registered an interest in signing Stones on a free transfer when his Manchester City contract expires in June.
The Barnsley-born star is also wanted by Serie A duo Juventus and AC Milan, who are said to be seriously considering a swoop for the centre-half ahead of the summer transfer window.
Everton are also interested in bringing Stones back to Merseyside a decade on from him leaving the Toffees to join forces with Guardiola at the Etihad Stadium.
Stones departs alongside fellow long-serving stalwart Bernardo Silva, who confirmed his own exit in April and is understood to have indicated a preference of joining Barcelona.
Together, the two departures represent the most significant changing of the guard at the Etihad Stadium since the exits of Vincent Kompany and David Silva in 2019 and 2020 respectively.
From the Barnsley Beckenbauer to hybrid hero of Istanbul, John Stones will live in the memory of Manchester City fans forever
The quality and breadth of interest in Stones underlines the regard in which he is held across European football despite a season disrupted by injury.
Bayern Munich’s pursuit is particularly notable given Vincent Kompany‘s presence in the dugout at the Allianz Arena – a manager Guardiola has publicly tipped as a future Manchester City manager and someone with whom Stones shared several seasons in sky blue.
For Stones, the summer represents the beginning of a new chapter and on this evidence, he will have no dearth of options when it opens.
