Bayern Munichâs 4-3 victory against Real Madrid was anything but smooth sailing. The pressure of the fixture was immense and showed its impact. Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer committed a huge blunder, giving away a free goal in the very first minute. The big German conceded more goals and looked completely different from his self in Madrid a week ago.
Arda GĂŒler was the best player for Los Blancos. Anticipating Bayernâs tendency to play out of situations, he always ensured to press passing lanes. His first goal came off picking a poor pass from Neuer to the defense. What followed was an audacious attempt to shoot at an empty net from the edge of the final third. The angle and the shot taken with the very first touch made it a tricky attempt that GĂŒler executed to perfection.
GĂŒlerâs second goal, free kick off a controversial call from the referee was slotted into the top right corner. The pace of the shot caught Neuer off-guard as he was too late to stop the goal despite getting a hand to the ball. Admitting his error in the post-game interview(as captured by @iMiaSanMia) that led to Madridâs first goal, Neuer said, âI actually wanted to pass the ball to Stani but I didnât hit it well. GĂŒler did very well with the first time shot. We also saw later with the free kick that he has a very good left foot.â
Neuerâs mistake essentially wiped the slate clean for Real. Bayern lost their hard-fought single goal lead from the first leg. The Bavarians had a testing night that they managed to show immense mental strength and exceptional skill to score against a brash and brute Real Madrid defense.
The 4-3 result in favor of Bayern lightens the impact of the errors. history hasnât always been this kind. Major errors against Real Madrid were punished and Bayern could not recover from the errors. This time however, history is on Bayernâs side. Neuer kept his cool and made two important saves later. The save against Kylian Mbappe resembled the famous one handed block against Cristiano Ronaldo.
