DETROIT â Playing without Franz Wagner for the first time in their best-of-seven playoff series against the Pistons, the Magic felt confident they still had enough talent to close out the first-round series entering Wednesday night with a 3-1 lead.
No. 1 Detroit, however, had other plans while on the brink of elimination.
Behind 45 points from Montverde Academy product Cade Cunningham, the Pistons threw the first punch and remained aggressive throughout the night in order to win Game 5 inside Little Caesars Arena, 116-109, in front of a national TV audience on Amazonâs Prime Video.
Despite Paolo Banchero leading Orlando with playoff career-high 45 points, the Magic failed to get over the hump against Detroit, even though the group remained well within striking distance much of the second half.
With the eighth-seeded Magic still leading the series 3-2, the series shifts back to Central Florida for Game 6 at Kia Center on Friday night.
Neither side took care of the ball when the Pistons scored 19 points off 16 takeaways and the Magic notched 22 points off 17 Detroit turnovers. But Detroit controlled the glass, outrebounding Orlando 16-8 on the offensive end, which led to 22 second-chance points.
The final score was 116-109 in favor of the Detroit Pistons.

With Wagnerâs status unclear moving forward after he was diagnosed with a right calf strain, Orlando will have another chance to advance out of the first round for the first time since 2010 on Friday night.
The Magic forward didnât let two early fouls slow him down when he knocked down his first pair of 3-pointers and soared through the sky for a steal-and-slam to help produce an efficient 22-point first half.
Banchero notched 10 points in the first quarter and added 12 in the second while he did a little bit of everything early with five rebounds, four assists and two steals before the break.
He kept it up on the offensive end by adding three more 3-pointers early in the fourth quarter. His third triple pulled Orlando within three points with 1:09 left in the game.
The career performance marked the seventh time he has scored 30-plus points during the postseason in his career. He neared a triple-double with nine rebounds and seven assists in 41 minutes.
Jamal Cain earned the start in place of Wagner, who was ruled out prior to tipoff because of a right calf strain suffered in the third quarter of Game 4.
Cain wasnât expected to play a large offensive role and that remained true when he shot 1 for 4 for the night for just five points.
Desmond Bane knocked down four triples to reach 18 points but found himself in foul trouble when he picked his third foul at the 2:49 mark of the second quarter, his fourth halfway through the third and his fifth in the final frame.
Jalen Suggs also hit twice from distance but started off slowly, only taking one shot from the floor in his first 12 minutes of action. Suggs ended with 10 points in 37 minutes.
Wendell Carter Jr. only took four shots during the game and finished with nine points, four rebounds and four assists.
Although Anthony Black committed three turnovers, he provided a necessary offensive boost off the bench for Orlando with 19 points, a playoff career high.
The third-year pro knocked down four 3-pointers and shot 7 for 12 overall from the field while adding five rebounds and three assists in 39 minutes.
Black, however, picked up his fifth foul more than halfway through the fourth quarter.
The Magic sent the Pistons to the free-throw line early and often. By the half, Detroit had actually made the same amount of free throws (19) as Orlando had attempted to that point in the game.
But neither side was efficient from the charity stripe throughout the night.
In a seven-point game, the Pistons (28 for 35) missed seven free throws while the Magic (16 for 30) missed 14.
