GREENSBORO โ Two of High Point's most accomplished athletes have joined an elite group of those who have impacted North Carolina sports.
Heather Richardson Bergsma and Eddie Pope โ two of the four High Pointers ever to compete in the Olympics โ are among this year's class of the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame. They were inducted in a ceremony Friday evening at the Sheraton at Four Seasons Convention Center.
The 62nd class also includes golfer Chip Beck (Fayetteville), football player Louis Breeden (Hamlet), basketball coach Leonard Hamilton (Gastonia), former North Carolina basketball player Tyler Hansbrough, Winston-Salem State football player Richard Huntley, tennis player John Isner (Greensboro), basketball coach Norvell Lee (Smithfield), and wrestling coach Jerry Winterton (Cary).
"It really is a privilege and an honor to be here with so many legends," Bergsma said during Thursday's press event at the Greensboro Complex. "Once you get the phone call and you see the class that you're in, you start Googling and think, 'Am I worthy enough to be a part of this class?' You know? It's just really exciting and I'm honored to be here. It really shows that the hard work that I put into my sport of speedskating does pay off."
Bergsma competed at the highest levels of speedskating for over a decade โ reaching the Olympics in 2010 in Vancouver, in 2014 in Sochi and in 2018 in Peyongchang. She took bronze in the team pursuit in 2018 โ becoming the first High Pointer ever to earn an Olympic medal.
Bergsma recalled growing up in the Triad and graduating from High Point Central at the Greensboro Complex. Since then, speedskating has taken her around the world, winning 88 World Cup medals โ including 34 gold โ and becoming a four-time world champion in the 1,000 meters, her specialty.
Bergsma โ the second speedskater selected for the Hall, joining Greensboro's Joey Cheek โ also won the world title in the 1,500 meters and held four world records during her career.
"I'm really grateful for the community we had in speedskating in High Point with Bob Byerly," she said, recalling the longtime skating coach and Rol-a-Rink owner. "The rink he had and the community he had for speedskating, it gave a lot of us an opportunity in that sport.
"I met my husband through speedskating. I live in the Netherlands now with him and we have two children. And I'm very happy. It actually lines up perfectly โ my kids are on spring break. They brought their skates and they've been to Skateland USA here in Greensboro. So it's fun to bring them to how I grew up, where my roots began."
Pope remains one of the top soccer players to come from the area. He played in the MLS and for the national team for over a decade โ playing in the Olympics in 1996 in Atlanta and in three World Cups. Pope was selected to the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2011.
"Of course, when you're inducted into a hall of fame, it's always special," he said. "Most of them are soccer-specific, but this one is all-encompassing, representing all sports. It's kind of like you're getting a little bit of outside recognition. People are watching, paying attention. That's special."
The latest inductees include Heather Richardson Bergsma and Eddie Pope, along with several other notable athletes and coaches.
Heather Richardson Bergsma competed in speedskating at the Olympics, participating in the 2010, 2014, and 2018 Games.
At the 2018 Olympics, Heather Richardson Bergsma won a bronze medal in the team pursuit, making her the first athlete from High Point to earn an Olympic medal.
The induction ceremony was held at the Sheraton at Four Seasons Convention Center in Greensboro.

Pope was at the forefront of soccer's emerging popularity in the United States. Growing up in High Point, he played on teams at Southwest Guilford and with the High Point Stars. He quickly turned that into a successful career at North Carolina and a pro career in the MLS.
"People use the word 'pioneer,' and of course it makes you feel old," he said with a laugh. "But it's true at the end of the day. When I went into college, there was no professional league. So, you're thinking, 'What am I going to do after college? Am I going to go to law school?' Whatever it was.
"My junior year they announced the league, and suddenly it became a real possibility. Yeah, we're pioneers, but to watch how much has grown. Now you have 14-, 15-year-old kids signing professional contracts. Before, you had to graduate college to get a professional contract. So, it's been cool."
Pope played a dozen years with DC United, New York/New Jersey MetroStars and Real Salt Lake โ scoring the game-winning goal in the first-ever MLS Cup. Among a host of accolades, he was named a five-time MLS All-Star and the 1997 MLS Defensive Player of the Year.
He was named to the MLS All-Time Best XI in 2005.
Pope โ just the third soccer selection to the Hall, joining Carla Overbeck and Anson Dorrance โ has since returned to High Point, where he is currently the chief sporting officer for Carolina Core FC โ a far cry from the days when his team at Southwest was allotted space out in front of the school.
"There is no way I could've fathomed that," he said of the area's soccer boom. "That's a real story โ I remember my dad having to be like, 'They get to use the field just like the other sports get to use the fields.' At that time, that's how it was. It's been a long road, but, man, it's come so far, and it's been worth it."
The North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame is currently undergoing renovations in Raleigh and will reopen in 2029. Until then, the Greensboro History Museum will host temporary exhibits, and a Hall of Fame wall will be displayed in the bridge area of the Greensboro Complex.
