Penn State recruiting has been on a bit of a heater lately, and the results are showing in the national recruiting rankings. Off the heels of securing a commitment from quarterback Will Wood and four-star running back Aiden Gibson this week, Penn State has received a nice little boost up in the national recruiting rankings in the middle of May.
According to the updated national recruiting rankings from 247Sports, Penn State has the No. 5 recruiting class in the Class of 2027. Penn State's top-five rankings move the Nittany Lions to second among Big Ten teams, moving ahead of Oregon and Ohio State and just behind USC.
Penn State's recruiting class currently consists of 18 commitments, which is second-most among teams ranked in 247Sports' top-10 at the moment (Oklahoma has 21 total commitments; UCLA, ranked no. 6, also has 18 commitments). Of those 18 commitments, a total of six players are rated as four-star recruits. The remaining 12 commitments are all rated as three-star prospects.
While Penn State has a top-five recruiting class according to 247Sports, the recruiting rankings from Rivals are a bit less optimistic about the Nittany Lions. The current team recruiting rankings from Rivals have Penn State sitting at No. 15 in the nation. That places Penn State sixth among Big Ten programs at the moment. Part of the difference in recruiting rankings is influenced by Rivals only rating 5 of Penn State's commits as four-star players and 13 as 3-star players.

Penn State can still add some star power to its Class of 2027. A few players who originally backed out of a commitment to the Nittany Lions following the in-season coaching change last fall still remain available, and Penn State is still thoroughly in play as an option. Safety Gabe Jenkins, from Pittsburgh, is one to keep a close eye on. Jenkins is still projected by many to end up at Penn State when all is said and done, but he does reportedly have planned visits to Virginia Tech and Pittsburgh lined up. He is also scheduled to visit Colorado this weekend. He does have an official visit with Penn State scheduled in early June as well.
Four-star wide receiver Khalil Tyalor, from Gibsonia, Pennsylvania, is also still available. Once again, Penn State could still end up winning back his commitment. Penn State was still among his top schools, and the Nittany Lions are still projected to win his commitment, although there is some competition from programs like Alabama, Georgia, and Nebraska to overcome.
If Penn State can manage to keep these two players from leaving the state, then Matt Campbell will have done quite nicely wiht his first full recruiting cycle in Happy Valley.
