Bijan Robinson contract decision highlights his value to Falcons’ offensive identity

The Falcons didn’t pick up Bijan Robinson’s fifth-year option on April 10 just for the sake of paperwork. They did it because he still represents exactly what their offence is meant to be. Atlanta added the option for 2027, and several reports have since described it as a likely step toward a longer contract.

That puts the football side of things into focus. The Falcons still want their offence to run through the back who can shape coverages and set the pace on the ground.

Robinson has become the player who defines what the offense should look like. He’s an All-Pro running back, a consistent mismatch as a receiver, and the most direct way for Atlanta to prevent every play from falling on their quarterback.

NBC Sports followed up with another point that was easy to see coming: talk of an extension. That’s because Atlanta isn’t viewing Robinson as just another rookie deal to manage. They’re treating him as one of the pieces they know fits exactly where they need it.

What the Robinson option signals about how Atlanta wants to run its passing game

The most dependable form of Atlanta’s attack isn’t built around the quarterbacks taking on every play from behind centre. Instead, it relies on Robinson’s ability to draw extra attention, stress linebackers in coverage, and open up space for everyone else in the formation.

That doesn’t mean the Falcons plan to play it safe. It just means their best bet is still having Robinson set the tone, forcing defences to adjust from the very first snap.
