It was an interesting week for the Boston College baseball program. They’ve been on an upward trajectory all season with a real shot to host NCAA tournament games in Brighton, and their sweep over Duke this weekend furthered that endeavor. Game 1 on Friday was a rout from the start, as the Eagles piled on 8 runs by the end of the second inning, blowing up Blue Devil starter Aidan Weaver for 5 hits and 3 walks. BC went on to win 11-1 in seven innings.
Game 2 on Saturday was a much closer affair that saw BC take yet another early lead. Julio Solier, Ty Mainolfi, and Jack Toomey all rounded the bases on a series of that featured an error, a single, and a wild pitch. But Duke starting pitcher Peter Lemke tightened up after that, pitching five innings without letting up another score. BC starting pitcher Brady Miller had a great outing himself, giving up only one run on a solo homer through five innings before eventually the Eagles surrender an unearned run on an error to make it a 3-2 ballgame. Solier came up big again in the next half inning though, hitting a single to bring home Colin Larson and stretch the BC lead to 4-2. BC’s Gavin Soares closed the final two innings by only giving up two hits to secure the victory.
Game 3, later on Saturday, had all of the makings of another close contest. After making it to the 5th inning with a 1-0 lead, BC starter Tyler Mudd surrendered four runs that included a three-run shot by Matthew Strand. Then, after Duke extended their lead to 5-1, BC came fighting back in the bottom of the 6th. Colin Larson solo homered on a 3-2 count to start. Then after the bases got loaded up, Carter Hendrickson brought them all home with a 3RBI triple down the left field line, tying the game at 5-5. That was followed by solo shot from Julio Solier in the next inning to give BC a 1-run lead, followed again by Duke’s Kaden Smith hitting an RBI single to tie it back up in the top of the 8th.
Boston College won the first game 11-1, the second game 4-2, and the third game ended in a tie before Duke ultimately won.
Julio Solier, Ty Mainolfi, and Carter Hendrickson were key contributors, with Solier hitting crucial home runs and Hendrickson delivering a 3-RBI triple.
The sweep over Duke enhances Boston College's chances of hosting NCAA tournament games in Brighton.

Nobody could have predicted what came next. BC’s bats roared to life in the bottom of the 8th in a tie game. They scored 8 runs and went around the entire lineup, demolishing Blue Devil relievers Ben Dean and David Boisvert. Carter Hendrickson was the one who scored the first run of the half-inning on a Luke Gallo homer, and he was the last one to hit an RBI when he brought in Jack Toomey on a bunt. It was a terrific showing for the Eagles’ offense to earn the series sweep.
Much of BC’s progress was lost on Tuesday, though. BC dropped a game to Maine, who ranked in the 100s in RPI, and severely dropped themselves in the national rankings. The Black Bears lit up BC starter Jacob Burnham to open the game, getting three runners on base and scoring two of them in the 1st inning. Then Maine third baseman Troy Carpenter solo homered off of Burnham in the 3rd inning, and the Eagle pitcher was done for the day shortly after. BC had a big 4th inning and managed to tie the game at 3-3, thanks to a series of short hits and a bases-loaded walk by Nick Wang, but otherwise their offense really struggled against Maine’s bullpen.
BC reliever Sean Hard only made it two innings before he surrendered two extra-base hits and a run in the 5th inning that gave Maine back the lead. BC finally got on Ty Mainolfi on base in the 8th inning in scoring position, and Nick Wang hit a deep fly ball that brought in the SAC RBI to tie the game. But BC’s Cesar Gonzalez blew the save in the 9th, giving up a two-run homer to Maine’s Juju Stevens that would be the clincher for the Black Bears. BC dropped from 22nd to 29th in national RPI as a result of the game.
Next up for Boston College baseball is a road series in South Bend against Notre Dame, who is dead last in the ACC standings. That will be followed by a one-off game in Lowell against UMass Lowell on Tuesday.
