Blackhawks Fan Guide For 2026 NHL Draft Lottery: Start Time, Odds, Top Options
For the third consecutive year, the Chicago Blackhawks hold the second-best odds of winning the NHL Draft Lottery, which will be broadcast on ESPN and Sportsnet at 6:00 p.m. CT on Tuesday. Only the Vancouver Canucks have a better chance at landing the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft.
By way of losing 13 of their final 17 games in the 2025-26 regular season, the Blackhawks are guaranteed a top-four draft pick once again this summer. They have a 13.5% chance of receiving the top selection, a 14.1% chance of staying put at No. 2, a 30.7% chance of dropping to No. 3, and a 41.7% chance of falling two spots to No. 4.
With the same odds in 2024, the Blackhawks lost out to the San Jose Sharks in the âMacklin Celebrini Sweepstakesâ by receiving the second overall pick, which was eventually used to select defenseman Artyom Levshunov. In 2025, the Hawks moved down one spot to third overall and drafted forward Anton Frondell, who appears to have been a wise choice.
This time around, GM Kyle Davidson and Co. are hoping Tuesdayâs lottery results in another top-two selection, which would be their third in four years. That would result in either Gavin McKenna or Ivar Stenberg falling into their laps, who are seemingly the consensus top-two players in the 2026 class at this point. Should the Blackhawks win the lottery, it would be fascinating to see who they would choose between the two.
McKennaâs freshman season of NCAA hockey with Penn State was filled with ups and downs and off-ice controversy, but he still seems to be the odds-on favorite to be the top overall pick. Despite all the adversity, the 18-year-old still produced a stellar 51 points (15G, 36A) in 35 games for the Nittany Lions, one of the top teams in the country. McKenna also racked up 14 points (4G, 10A) in seven games for Team Canada at the U20 World Junior Championship.
The 2026 NHL Draft Lottery will start at 6:00 p.m. CT on Tuesday.
The Blackhawks have a 13.5% chance of winning the top pick, with additional chances of staying at No. 2, dropping to No. 3, or falling to No. 4.
The Vancouver Canucks have better odds than the Blackhawks in the 2026 NHL Draft Lottery.
In 2024, the Blackhawks received the second overall pick, and in 2025, they moved down to the third overall pick.

Stenberg, also 18, is coming off an exceptional season of his own. Already playing in Swedenâs top professional league, he recorded an impressive 33 points (11G, 22A) in 43 games and proved capable of handling his own against men. Thereâs a case to be made that Stenberg could become the better all-around player, as heâs impactful without the puck and scrappy in the dirty areas. He flashed that throughout the U20 World Junior Championship, where he was among the tournamentâs best players and helped Sweden snap a 14-year Gold-Medal drought.
If the Blackhawks fall to No. 3 for the second consecutive lottery, which would be disappointing, considering both McKenna and Stenberg would likely be off the board, there would be a major debate between a slew of players.
Should Davidson be looking to add another forward to his prospect pool, Caleb Malhotra would be the favorite, thanks to a spectacular postseason with the Brantford Bulldogs in the OHL. Of course, the Blackhawks are more than familiar with the Bulldogs at this point, with Davidson selecting one player from the club in each of the last three NHL Drafts (Nick Lardis in 2023, Marek Vanacker in 2024, Parker Holmes in 2025). Theyâve surely seen Malhotra in action plenty of times this season, and theyâre also no strangers to selecting players from the OHL under Davidson.
If the Blackhawks want to go with a defenseman at No. 3, theyâll have to choose between Keaton Verhoeff, Chase Reid, Carson Carels, and Albert Smits. While the team already has plenty of young defensemen on its NHL roster, they are still missing a true No. 1 on the backend. Should they feel either of those four players could develop into that, or at least become a top-pairing defenseman, it wouldnât be surprising to see Davidson go that route.
Should the Blackhawks drop to the fourth overall pick, their selection would widely depend on who gets drafted ahead of them at No. 3. If Malhotra is no longer available, they would most likely choose one of the four defensemen.
Currently, Davidson has only one first-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. However, heâs made at least two selections in each of his first four drafts as general manager. With three second-round picks to work with, thereâs certainly a chance that he tries to trade back into the first round at some point.
The Blackhawks also possess three first-round picks in the 2027 NHL Draft â one from the Edmonton Oilers in the Jason Dickinson & Colton Dach trade, and the other from the Florida Panthers in the Spencer Knight-Seth Jones swap. Of course, the Hawks could have had the Panthersâ first-round pick for the 2026 Draft, had they not secured a top-10 selection.
With plenty of picks, not to mention a stacked prospect pool, in his arsenal, Davidson and the Blackhawks very well could be aggressive again in this yearâs draft. The results from Tuesdayâs Draft Lottery will weigh heavily into their decision-making.
