Blades Boss Heaps Praise on Subs in Dramatic Comeback Win Over Hull
Sheffield United produced a late comeback to beat Hull City 2-1 at Bramall Lane on Saturday afternoon.
The visitors made the perfect start, silencing the home crowd inside five minutes. Oli McBurnie was the unlikely source of Hullâs opener against his former club, latching onto a clever pass from Liam Millar before guiding a smart near-post finish beyond the goalkeeper.
It set the tone for a chaotic and open first half, with both sides creating chances in what Chris Wilder later described as a âbasketballâ contest. United showed attacking intent but were repeatedly caught out by loose possession, allowing Hull to threaten on the counter.
The gameâs decisive moment arrived with 15 minutes remaining. John Lundstram, once a fan favourite at Bramall Lane, was dismissed after receiving a second yellow card, shifting the momentum firmly in Unitedâs favour. Wilder later admitted some sympathy for the midfielder, but there was no doubt the red card altered the course of the match.
Tensions rose further moments later when Jairo Riedewald was brought down inside the penalty area by Kyle Joseph. The flashpoint sparked a flurry of bookings, with John Egan and Hull goalkeeper Ivor Pandur both cautioned as tempers frayed in an increasingly heated atmosphere.
From the spot, Gustavo Hamer held his nerve. Stepping up in front of the Kop, he coolly converted to bring United level. The Blades pushed forward and their pressure soon paid off. Substitute Danny Ings, introduced only minutes earlier, made an instant impact. Meeting a precise cross from Japhet Tanganga, Ings slid home the winner to complete a remarkable turnaround.
After the match, Chris Wilder was quick to praise his playersâ resilience and the supportersâ patience.
He said to SUTV: âDelighted for the supporters that we got the win because itâs an expectant club and an expectant crowd and weâve not delivered what we shouldâve done. We have to own that; three draws and three losses in the last six is not good enough for me or the football club.
âThe game was a game of basketball, it couldâve been 4-4 at half time. Weâve given away a goal again, they didnât have to work hard for it. Good players making really poor decisions⊠maybe thatâs a lack of confidence and belief.
âBut we had more control in the second half, created chances, and got our reward.â
Wilder also highlighted the importance of mentality heading into the final stretch of the season, calling on his players to show consistency and hunger.
âNow the challenge is going to Watford on Saturday; how do we want it to look between now and the end of the season? I want a team that goes and goes and wants to win and win and win. Players that show that will be here next year. Those that donât, the reset will begin.â
The United boss also reserved praise for his substitutes, particularly match-winner Ings.
âI challenged the subs before the game to make a difference because I donât think they have enough this season. Thankfully, they did today. I felt it was the right time to get Danny on and heâs delivered.â
Sheffield United will look to build on this win in their penultimate away trip against Watford next Saturday afternoon.
The final score was Sheffield United 2, Hull City 1.
Oli McBurnie scored the opening goal for Hull City.
Chris Wilder described the match as a 'basketball' contest due to its chaotic and open nature.
