The New Orleans Saints appear to be entering a new era in their offensive backfield. As a result, Alvin Kamara, one of the greatest running backs in franchise history, might be the odd man out.
Despite the Saints' big splash signing earlier this offseason, giving standout running back Travis Etienne Jr. a four-year, $48 million contract, Kamara has maintained a desire to play in New Orleans. Speaking recently on The Set podcast with Terron Armstead, the five-time Pro Bowl running back expressed a willingness to share a workload with Etienne in 2026.
"I'm excited to see what we could do together," Kamara said. "That's the name of the game, shoot. Depth — one person can't do it by themselves, so I'm cool with it, man."
The backfield — and the front office — is at a crossroads with what will happen ahead of the season. The team has Etienne, Kamara, recent draft picks Devin Neal and Kendre Miller, and Audric Estime, who ran hard late last season. They've also signed former Ohio State running back CJ Donaldson to an undrafted free agent deal and will host South Carolina's Rahsul Faison for a rookie minicamp tryout. Kamara, 30, remains the oldest in the bunch and the most likely to part ways with New Orleans.
The Kansas City Chiefs and Dallas Cowboys are potential suitors for Alvin Kamara.
Kamara may leave due to the Saints' new offensive direction and the signing of Travis Etienne Jr., which could limit his role.
Alvin Kamara is still with the Saints but faces uncertainty regarding his future as the team evaluates its running back options.

If the Saints and Kamara decide that it's best to move on, an aging running back might be difficult to trade, but the running back's dual-threat ability remains as something that could interest several teams. The Dallas Cowboys and Kansas City Chiefs are two potential post-June 1 landing spots, as Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox recently suggested.
The Cowboys, who recently locked up standout running back Javonte Williams on a long-term contract, have shown a willingness to make trades at the right price. They acquired wideout George Pickens from the Pittsburgh Steelers last summer; spending a sixth-or seventh-round pick on Kamara isn't out of the realm of possibilities. His ability to catch the ball out of the backfield could offer Dak Prescott a safety valve on passing downs.
As for the Chiefs, a team always looking to maximize the weapons around Patrick Mahomes, they signed Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III in free agency, while drafting Nebraska's Emmett Johnson on Day 3 of the 2026 NFL Draft. There might not be a role for Kamara perfectly carved out as it stands, but if there's one thing that head coach Andy Reid and the Chiefs have shown, it's that they're willing to use their players in unconventional ways to get them the ball in space.
Ultimately, Kamara is under contract through next season before a void in his contract could make him a free agent next offseason. If a team is willing to trade late Day 3 compensation in 2027 to acquire a high-ceiling, low-floor running back ready to contribute and compete for a championship, Kamara appears to be the guy.
