The Bloomington North boys track team put on an impressive display at the final Conference Indiana track meet on a chilly night at Bloomington South.
And it wasn't necessarily the seven individual titles, or school record that was broken, so much as the point total. The Cougars were missing four of their star athletes in seniors Caleb Winders, Jacob Mitchell and Evan Cheng, all favored to win a CI titles, and junior Liam Conlin, North's No. 2 hurdler.
Despite that, North won a seventh straight league title on Friday, May 1, 2026 with its 158 points still topping the field. Bloomington South was next in line at 120.
Bloomingto North’s Alan Hays competes in the 110 meter hurdles during the Conference Indiana track meet at Bloomington South on Friday, May 1, 2026.
"We've got lot of depth," North coach Justin Helmer said. "Even last year we had a team that qualified so many events at the state meet and return so many of those people. We're just good across the board, and obviously, we're better in some areas than others.
"But to be able to do that without some of our best, yeah, that does say a lot about our team right now."
Helmer expected all four to return for when it counts.
"We just want to make sure we're being smart about it," Helmer said.
What stars did the heavy lifting North needed to win? Caelan D'Onofrio won the 1,600 (4:12.87 for a near miss of the school record) and the 800 (1:58.96) and anchored the 4x400 relay to a win (3:23.76). Adis Hamidovic (167-2, 54-6) and Quinn Walters (151-10, 52-8¾) went 1-2 in discus and shot put; Alan Hays won the 300 hurdles (38.64) and was second in the 110s (14.28) right at his career bests, James Bosco sped to the 400 title in a school record 48.32 and Josiah Powell held his own with third place finishes in the sprints.
Helmer also saw Liam Chaveas (15.43) and Tom Muller (42.85) take third in their hurdles races and Jake Gentry take fifth in the 800, Shep Jackson fourth in the 1,600 and Tucker Inman third in the 3,200. The 4x400 also still pulled away from the field for the cap on the evening.
"They were excited for an opportunity," Helmer said. "And where we were missing, we have some pretty good depth. Chaveas coming in and running 15.4, that's pretty darn good for your No. 3 guy. I was hard to decide who to run in the 300s and went with Tom and he PR'd."
Bloomington South’s Kevin Reeves anchors the 400 meter relay to a win during the Conference Indiana track meet at Bloomington South on Friday, May 1, 2026.
The South boys pulled out five titles, two in field events with Phillip Kroeger in long jump (20-5½) and pole vaulter Arthur Banks (14-0). The sprint crew did the honors on the other three, with two by Gabe Taylor (100 and 200), who led of the winning 4x100 relay (43.35).
"Gabe, it's awesome for him to go away as double event conference champ," South coach Larry Williams said. "He's an early admit to the Kelley School of Business (at IU) and wondering if (IU men's track) might entertain him walking on there.
"We had two sophomores that were on the 4-by-1 this evening. The hope is Khaliq Akou can get back to where he can run the 200 and run the 4-by-1 with us. With him on that anchor, it's a school record."
The Panthers also liked the six-second drop in the 4x800 relay for second in 8:07.90. Noah Field was second in the shot put with an injured hand.
Bloomington South’s Lexi Kollbaum competes in the 800 meter run during the Conference Indiana track meet at Bloomington South on Friday, May 1, 2026.
The girls side was dominated by South, which piled up 173 points, seven titles (sweeping the relays), seven runner-ups and two school records to repeat, topping Columbus North (135) and Bloomington North (73).
Ellie Barada took down her own school and meet record in the 400 in 54.68 and shattered the meet record in the 800 by five seconds in 2:10.40 and anchored the 4x400 to a season-best 4:00.14 and the win.
Adriene Shaevitz had good reason to take one more big leap after her 100-hurdles race that resulted in a conference and school record of 13.95. She was second in the 300s (45.97) and led off the winning 4x100 relay that had a season best 48.75.
Lexi Kollbaum had a strong last lap to pull into first on the front stretch in the 1,600 for a win in 4:57.76 and also took second in the 800. Violet Hall was second in the 200 and third in the long jump; Helena Cutshall was second in the long jump and third in the 100 and Alaina Bunnell (12.62) was second in the 100. Jasmine Martoglio was second in the 3,200 and Chelsea Johnson was third in pole vault.
North's only champion was a bit of a surprise as Delilah Kilbride made it over a career best 10-0 to win pole vault. The Cougars also saw Ashley Greer take second in shot put and third in discus; Lucah Feagans third in the 200 and 400 and Hayden McGuire third in the 800. Sophie Winkle had top-seven finishes in both hurdles, long jump and 4x100 relay.
"Overall as a team, we were hoping to try to get third," Helmer said. "We knew it would be close with us and Terre Haute South and Bloomington South and Columbus North would be too far way from us. We were fourth last year, so then to come back and get third, we feel good about that."
Bloomington South’s Gabe Taylor celebrates after winning the 100 meter dash during the Conference Indiana track meet at Bloomington South on Friday, May 1, 2026.
A bit of a tailwind may have helped the sprinters and hurdlers early, but it kept getting colder as the night went on, dipping into the 40s.
Typically, that wouldn't seem ideal conditions for sprinters, but several thrived in the night air.
Taylor is now firmly ensconced in the 10s, going 10.77 last Saturday at the Edgewood Invitational and then posting a pair of 10.75s in taking the 100 and going 22.05, both under the state standard.
"I'm feeling great," Taylor said. "I'm hitting the weight room hard, eating the right stuff, taking care of my body. I'm really grateful and blessed to have the great times and teammates and coaches who support me.
"It's so cool to have all the guys push me. And I'm doing my best to kind of lead them and they lead me.
The Panthers were missing one of their top sprinters in injured senior Khaliq Akou, but were buoyed by the emergence of Simon Barnes, a converted 400 guy who is now under the state standard in the 100 after his 10.96 was good for second. He also went under the standard in the 200 for second 22.14 in the 200.
"He has come so far," Taylor said. "I knew he was going to be good when I first met him freshman year."
If Akou can get healthy enough, he also capable of the same types of races, potentially giving South three runners in each event and a 4x100 that could break into the 41s. They recently posted a school record 42.17.
Hays, who missed last year's CI meet due to injury, is also on his own record-setting pace after posting the second best time in school history in the 110s, just .06 off Max Tuttle's mark. Both he and the winner took down the meet record 14.29 former Cougar Ben Boland ran last year. Tuttle's 37.49 in the 300s is more of a stretch, but Hays is after it, too.
"I feel like I hit a bit of a slump the past few meets," Hays said. "So I knew I had to come out and rebuild my confidence and get out fast, despite the weather."
Bloomington South’s Adriene Shaevitz and Columbus North’s Lily Miller compete in the 300 meter hurdles during the Conference Indiana track meet at Bloomington South on Friday, May 1, 2026.
Shaevitz had a huge breakthrough after a series of them already this season in the 100 hurdles, nudging her school record below the 14-second mark. Consider only one finalist at state last year came in sub-14.
"I just really excited about," Shaevitz said. "I was secretly hoping, I didn't tell anybody about it, that I wanted to break 14. I had a feeling after the race that was the one."
When she broke the record last year for the first time, it motivated her to do more.
"I've just been really committed lately to hurdles," she said. "I really loved it more than I had before. It's just what I want to do with my career, especially going to IU-Indy I want to have a strong start.
"I've been really focusing on my trail leg. That's the main thing. I try to give it my all."
As proof, she's taken on the 300s this year and going 45.97, she's just .33 off Jordan Monson's school record.
South's Barada also chose the cool night to pull the tough 400-800 double with only the 300 hurdles races in between. And now both CI records are hers.
"I was kind of nervous," Barada said. "I had pants on, and then I was, 'I don't want to run in pants, but should I?' So I ended up taking then off because I got really hot. 'I'm feeling good.'
"I was watching all the 200 and 100 runners in shorts and I was like, 'I think I'll be fine."
Free to focus on the races themselves, she had a big night despite no one around her as she rounded the last curve of the 400. Her ability to push herself kicked in.
"I knew this was probably going to be my last fresh 400," Barada said. "Last week, I ran 55.8 and it was insanely windy and I think that had an affect on the times that night. Tonight, even though it was chillier, there was a lot less wind, so I really wanted to go for it."
Bloomington North’s James Bosco competes in the 400 meter dash during the Conference Indiana track meet at Bloomington South on Friday, May 1, 2026.
For North, Bosco also had a breakout race, taking down the school record of 48.39 in the 400 set by JQ Roberts in 2023.
"He had a little height advantage on me," Bosco said of the 6-foot-7 Roberts who now plays basketball at Davidson. "It was pretty cold, so I wasn't expecting fast times. But I felt pretty focused this race and going up to the line, I was like, 'I'm going to try for a fast time, at least.
"And I just felt smooth throughout the race. The final straight felt pretty smooth. I heard a lot of voices, 'He's right behind you.' But he wasn't. It got me motivated at least."
Bosco worked hard to improve his finish and saw it pay off.
"This year, I've been doing a lot more training before the season," Bosco said. "Some with Caleb and the other 800 runners to do more endurance stuff. So coming into this season, I felt I was much more prepared for the final straight.
"It's felt much better. I think I've been running similar 200 times to last year, but I've just been cruising more through the finish line. I've been running 48.8s, so this came out of the blue."
Bloomington North’s Delilah Kilbride celebrates after clearing 10 feet to win the pole vault during the Conference Indiana track meet at Bloomington South on Friday, May 1, 2026.
