The Columbus Blue Jackets want to upgrade their goalie depth this offseason.
They're looking to Russia, and the Kontinental Hockey League, to do so.
Their goal is to sign Sergei Ivanov, according to The Athletic's Aaron Portzline.
Columbus already has the rights to Ivanov from his selection as a fifth-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft. He has spent his career since that pick in the KHL.

He first played for Admiral Vladivostok (92.8 save percentage), then for HC Sochi (91.1) and this past season was with SKA St. Petersburg (92.8).
According to Portzline, Ivanov's contract expires at the end of May.
Columbus wants Ivanov to come stateside and play in the AHL for the Cleveland Monsters before potentially earning his way up to the NHL, according to Portzline.
"In the past, some Russian prospects have shown an aversion to developing in the AHL – many would rather remain closer to home unless they get the chance to play in the NHL," . "The Blue Jackets appear to believe that is not the case with Ivanov, who after three years in the KHL, could be headed to North America."

It would certainly be beneficial to Columbus to have Ivanov close by, both to watch his development and to have him on call if needed.
Goalie development is often a bumpy line, but Ivanov has thus far played well in Russia since being taken by Columbus.
The next step will be getting him over to the United States to see if he can impress and keep improving. That's what the Blue Jackets are hoping will happen in time for next season.
