The Toronto Blue Jays have struggled to replace the many key players who have been sidelined by injuries this season, but at least one call up has unearthed a promising young player.
In the wake of an early-season thumb surgery for All-Star catcher Alejandro Kirk, the Blue Jays have gotten an extended look at young backstop Brandon Valenzuela as his injury replacement. And the 25-year-old, who was acquired for infielder Will Wagner in a trade with the San Diego Padres last year, has been pretty impressive.
âIn a Toronto Blue Jays season that has over-indexed on unpleasant surprises, Brandon Valenzuela has been one of the few players who have exceeded expectations,â Nick Ashbourne wrote for Sportsnet. âJust 25 games into his career, itâs too early to render a verdict on what Valenzuela will be in the majors. It is enough to determine that he has tools that stand out among his peers, even at the gameâs highest level.â

Valenzuela is slashing .200/.300/.429 so far in his big-league debut, which might not match the output of a slugger like Kirk, but easily outpaces the Blue Jaysâ other healthy catcher option in Tyler Heineman. And he has flashed some strong defensive awareness and an ability to manage pitchers and frame their offerings.
All told, Valenzuela has made the Blue Jaysâ looming roster decision tough because, even as Heineman has no minor-league options remaining, it seems pretty clear that the younger backstop has proven himself as a more valuable second catcher for the big-league roster when Kirk returns.
âKirk is well on his way toward returning to the lineup and his elite backstopping,â Rosie DiManno wrote for the Toronto Star. âSchneider has made it clear the team wonât carry three catchers, meaning a decision must be made between Valenzuela and Tyler Heineman, with his dismal .155 average, as the backup. Heineman is out of options and would have to clear waivers. Would the Jays really send Valenzuela back to the minors?â
Kirk appears to be nearing a return, starting a hitting progression last week that suggests he could be back with the Blue Jays by the end of the month. That could soon force a tough roster decision for the team, but in the meantime, Valenzuela sent a message about the trade that brought him to the organization.
âBeing traded to the Blue Jays is the best thing thatâs ever happened to me,â Valenzuela told DiManno.
And if he sticks with the big-league team after Kirk returns, heâll have an even harder time topping that moment.
