The Toronto Blue Jays entered 2026 expecting their veteran rotation to once again be one of the club's biggest strengths. Instead, the pitching staff has quickly become one of the organization's biggest concerns. And now, the situation surrounding Jose Berrios appears even more serious.
Toronto received major injury news Saturday morning when it was revealed Berrios will undergo elbow surgery next week to repair the stress fracture that has sidelined him throughout the season. According to Sportsnet's Hazel Mae, there is also concern involving potential ligament damage, though the full extent will not be known until the procedure takes place. That uncertainty leaves the Blue Jays facing another major question mark in a season already filled with them.
For nearly a decade, Berrios built a reputation as one of baseball's most durable starting pitchers. The 31-year-old consistently took the ball every fifth day for both the Minnesota Twins and , making at least 30 starts in every full season since 2018. Even during the shortened 2020 season, Berrios still made 12 starts while handling a full workload.

That reliability made him incredibly valuable for Toronto's rotation. Now, the Blue Jays are facing the possibility of losing him for the remainder of the 2026 season, depending on what doctors discover during surgery. If ligament damage requires additional repair, Berrios could be looking at a significantly longer recovery timeline.
The timing could hardly be worse for Toronto. The Blue Jays are already navigating injuries throughout the pitching staff, including absences involving Shane Bieber, Max Scherzer and Bowden Francis. Francis has already been ruled out for the season, while Toronto continues waiting for Bieber and Scherzer to work their way back.
Because Berrios has not pitched this season, Toronto has already spent weeks adjusting without him. But officially learning surgery is required changes the long-term outlook around the rotation. Veteran left-hander Patrick Corbin may now be asked to shoulder an even larger role moving forward, while younger arms continue being pushed into important innings earlier than expected.
Toronto is also considering roster moves to help stabilize the pitching staff. Prospect Adam Macko reportedly joined the team in Detroit on the taxi squad as the Blue Jays evaluate possible bullpen reinforcements. At 19-25 entering Saturday, Toronto is already fighting to keep pace in the American League East. Losing a veteran presence like Berrios for an extended period only adds more pressure to a team that has struggled to find consistency all season.
And until the Blue Jays receive definitive answers following surgery, one of the franchise's biggest questions will continue hanging over the rest of the season.
