Blue Jays reveal Jose Berrios injury update that fans will hate to hear

It's a lengthy list for the Blue Jays, and according to Keegan Matheson of MLB.com, things might've just gotten worse. Matheson shared an update from Blue Jays manager John Schneider, who revealed some unfortunate news on Berrios.

"The Blue Jays are still working with Jose Berrios and doctors to reach a final decision on his elbow," Matheson reports. "Could have a final answer tomorrow. 'Surgery is on the table,' - John Schneider."

Berrios, the 31-year-old right-handed pitcher, hasn't pitched yet during the 2026 MLB season. He's been trying to work his way back from a stress fracture in his elbow right before the season began, but it's not gone well.

He was in the middle of a rehab stint, but a setback now has surgery on the table for the Blue Jays veteran right-hander.

After he posted a 4.17 ERA in 31 games (30 starts) and 166 innings with 138 strikeouts and 56 walks, Berrios didn't make an appearance during their World Series run.

He did return in the 2026 preseason and had a solid start to the year with a 3.38 ERA in three starts and 10.2 innings pitched with seven strikeouts.

While his rehab had been going well, this setback, and now this update from Schneider, in which surgery is on the table, is a brutal blow for Berrios.

There's a chance that he's okay, but this report is not what Blue Jays fans will want to hear about their recovering righty veteran.

With the injuries to Ponce, Scherzer, Bieber, Bowden, Francis, and Lazaro Estrada, the Blue Jays have six starting pitchers on the injured list.

And while it's still far from a certainty, this update does lead to fears that Berrios might wind up missing the rest of the season after elbow surgery.
