CAMDEN, N.J. -- The Philadelphia 76ers are heading into an uncertain offseason as they have to search for a new head of basketball operations after parting ways with Daryl Morey. The Sixers followed Morey's lead as the team's President of Basketball Operations for six seasons, but Philadelphia was unable to reach its ultimate goal of winning a title.
In the interim, Bob Myers will run the basketball department as he looks to lead the Sixers into the offseason and get everybody on the same page. Myers spent 11-plus seasons as the GM of the Golden State Warriors and will look to carry that success to Philadelphia. He was previously the President of Sports at Harris & Blitzer Sports & Entertainment working with Sixers managing partners Josh Harris and David Blitzer.
As Myers looks to get the Sixers moving forward after a Round 2 sweep, he described his draft philosophy as Philadelphia looks to get the pick right at No. 22 in June.
"This group's done a pretty good job drafting, to be honest," said Myers. "I don't want to come in and run over anybody. This existing group, including Daryl, has drafted some good players. (Tyrese) Maxey, VJ (Edgecombe), good examples of very successful players that were picked. So, I'm not an expert in that. I'll give my opinion. I want to meet with the group, hear what they say."
To the point of Myers, the Sixers have had success in the draft as of late. Maxey was selected No. 21 overall in the 2020 draft and he has morphed into a 2-time All-Star while Edgecombe, picked No. 3, has established himself as a good young talent in this league. The Sixers also selected Paul Reed and Isaiah Joe in the second round in 2020, and while neither player is with the team at the moment, they are rotation players for playoff teams at the moment.
Whoever Myers hires wants to be working in collaboration with himself as well as Harris and the staff that's currently in place. That will determine who Philadelphia drafts at No. 22.
"Each year is a little bit different as to what you're looking for," said Myers. "See who might be available at that pick and partner with new leadership, and see what their philosophies are on the whole thing, but look, obviously, you want somebody who can build on it. Maxey is the ultimate success story in that range. You can't expect that, but at the same time, getting a quality player you can build with."
Bob Myers is temporarily running the basketball operations for the Philadelphia 76ers after the departure of Daryl Morey.
The No. 22 pick is crucial for the Sixers as they aim to strengthen their roster and improve after a disappointing playoff exit.
Bob Myers plans to collaborate with the existing team and values their past drafting successes, aiming to build on their achievements.
