Bob Myers is evaluating the Philadelphia 76ers' roster, focusing on Joel Embiid and Paul George. Both players have struggled with injuries, impacting the team's performance despite significant financial commitments.
CAMDEN, N.J. -- The Philadelphia 76ers still feature one of the more talented rosters in the league headlined by Joel Embiid, Paul George, and Tyrese Maxey.
Unfortunately for the Sixers, they have committed a ton of money to Embiid and George and haven't gotten much in terms of the return. Embiid has been limited to 57 games over two seasons due to unfortunate injuries while George has played in only 78 games across the first two seasons of the 4-year $212 million deal he signed in 2024. Embiid's 3-year $193 million extension kicks in with the 2026-27 season.
As Bob Myers takes over the basketball operations on an interim basis, he will have to look at the roster and find ways to help it get better. He will evaluate everything on the roster, and that includes Embiid and George.
"I watch the team just like, I’m sure you watch the team," Myers said on Thursday. "The thing I liked was that we got to, and it's maybe not completely, but we got to see a healthy team, right? We got to see it most—at least in the playoffs. For the most part, Joel came back, and when you're healthy in the playoffs, the best part is you don't have any excuses about why you lost. You lost."
Myers is referring to the fact that Embiid was able to return from an appendectomy in Game 4 against the Boston Celtics in Round 1. The Sixers were able to pull off history as they rallied from a 3-1 deficit to eliminate the Celtics in seven games as they eliminated Boston in a playoff series for the first time since 1982. Embiid then played in three of the four games in the Round 2 sweep to the New York Knicks.
"I didn't like ever going into the playoffs with ‘Well, so and so was hurt, and if he had been healthy, we would have’ those hypotheticals aren't helpful," Myers added. "So what is helpful is we played a team. We were mostly healthy. We lost. OK? Let's just be honest about that. Let's acknowledge that."

When the Sixers do eventually make a new hire to run the basketball operations department, that hire will have to work with Myers and the rest of the staff to decide what needs to be done in terms of George, Embiid, and the rest of the roster--whether that's through the draft, free agency, or trade.
"That's going to be the next leading up to the draft, what do we need to draft?" Myers continued. "What are we missing? What do we not have? And then the question is going to be with what we have, how do we get better with what we have? And the final question is going to be, we got the mid-level exception. What do we do with that? But back to the other point, I want to partner with somebody that I can have those discussions with in a meaningful way, and I'm going to have those discussions with potential candidates and ask them that question. I don't have that answer today, but our job is to have that answer."
As the Sixers move forward, the goal and focus will be on improving. That is the operative word around these parts: improvement. Whether George and Embiid are in that equation, which they probably will be, but the Sixers will want to improve as a group.
"It was fascinating to hear from the current staff that I saw yesterday (Wednesday) in Chicago, what was said at the exit interviews? I find that very impactful," Myers finished. "I'm not going to tell you. That's not fair. All of it matters, all these conversations, all the things you learn about an organization when the game is over and you go in the locker room, and you talk to the players, you talk to the coach, talk to the training staff, what happened this season? Until we get all of that. Not going to say we've got the answers to that question, but I do know this. We have to get better. Find a way to get better."
