Bobby Witt Jr. Gets Real After Kansas City Royals Lose 8th Straight
The Kansas City Royals dropped another painful game on Monday night, falling 7-5 to the Baltimore Orioles in 12 innings at Kauffman Stadium for their eighth straight loss, which dropped them to 7-16, the worst record in all of Major League Baseball.
After the game, shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. did not sugarcoat things.
"You look back two months ago, a month ago, no one in here would believe we're technically the worst team in baseball," Witt Jr. said. "We believe in each and every one in here. It's frustrating. Sucks. It's one of those things where we got to be better."
The frustration makes total sense when you consider what this team was supposed to be. Kansas City went 86-76 in 2024 and made the playoffs, sweeping the Orioles in the Wild Card Series before falling to the Yankees.
Even after an 82-80 finish in 2025, the roster still looked like it had enough talent to compete again, but instead the early returns have been ugly.
Monday's loss might have been the most frustrating of the bunch. Seth Lugo was excellent on the mound, giving up just one hit in seven scoreless innings while lowering his ERA to 1.15.
The Royals outhit the Orioles 14-6 and had runners on base all night long.
They loaded the bases in the first inning with one out and came away with nothing, and by the end of the game they had stranded 16 baserunners and gone 5-for-21 with runners in scoring position.

Even though Kansas City fought back with three runs in the bottom half, it was too late, and the Orioles improved to 11-12 with the win.
The problems stretch well beyond one bad game, because multiple Royals hitters have been struggling all month.

Nobody saw this coming, and yet a team built around one of the best players in baseball and a pitching staff that looked solid on paper is sitting in last place in the AL Central, behind even the rebuilding White Sox at 8-14.
