BOYS TENNIS: West Scranton’s D’Augostine joins Abington Heights and Holy Cross duos in D2 semifinals

West Scranton’s Matthew D’Augostine reached the semifinals of the District 2 Class 3A Singles Championships on Thursday.

In the Class 3A tournament, top-seeded Prayush Mallaiah and No. 2 seed William Arp continued their undefeated seasons for Abington Heights. They are each in the semifinals. Mallaiah will face D’Augostine, who is the No. 5 seed, and Arp will play Wyoming Valley West’s Gadgidas Reisinger, the No. 3 seed.

The four players who led their teams to the District 2 Class 2A Team Championships final will square off in the semifinals. Top-seeded Billy Hall, of Wyoming Seminary, last season’s runner-up, faces Holy Cross’ Ray Zhang, the No. 4 seed. In the other matchup, Holy Cross’ Alex Harrison, the second seed, will play Wyoming Seminary’s Dhru Sudhakar, the No. 6 seed.

The tournament continues with semifinals on Friday at Kirby Park at 1 p.m. The championship finals follow.

D’Augostine defeated Pittston Area’s Artur Biksey, 6-0, 6-0, in the second round, then battled past Scranton’s Tom Bergman, the No. 4 seed, 6-2, 7-5, to reach the semifinals.

Mallaiah and Arp won their matches in straight sets. Mallaiah defeated Hazleton Area’s Jayden Forte and Crestwood’s Jack Groth, 6-0, 6-0. Arp beat Hazleton Area’s Mateo Feola, 6-0, 6-0, and Crestwood’s Sean Rossi, 6-1, 6-0.

Reisinger defeated West Scranton’s Aaron Castro, 6-0, 6-0, and Valley View’s Nick Burak, the No. 6 seed, 6-2, 6-2, to prevent an all-Lackawanna League semifinal.

Hall defeated Dunmore’s Keegan Oprisko, 6-1, 6-0, and Dallas’ Nate Linnen, the No. 8 seed, 6-1, 6-0. Sudhakar had three wins on Thursday. He defeated Tunkhannock’s Martin Ortiz, 6-1, 6-0, Wyoming Area’s Trevor Winslow, 6-0, 6-0, and MMI Prep’s Max Bleiler, the No. 3 seed, 6-1, 6-2.

Zhang had a win over Tunkhannock’s Lucas Mateus, 6-0, 6-2, and Honesdale’s Lewis Smith, the fifth seed, 6-0, 6-1. Harrison defeated Dallas’ Theo Barr, 6-1, 6-0, and North Pocono’s Billy Barker, the No. 7 seed, 6-1, 6-1.
