The Atlanta Braves underwent a full coaching staff overhaul after Brian Snitker announced his retirement. The Braves ultimately chose to stay in-house, promoting bench coach Walt Weiss to become their next manager.
âThe Atlanta Braves hired Walt Weiss as manager Monday, turning to their longtime bench coach in hopes of a turnaround after they missed the playoffs for the first time in seven years. Weiss, 61, managed the Colorado Rockies from 2013 to 2016, going 283-365 and never finishing higher than third place. He inherits a talented Braves team that finished 76-86 and was ravaged by injuries,â ESPNâs Jeff Passan wrote.
When Weiss assembled his staff, he prioritized young coaches who had helped improve their previous teams. One of those hires was former New York Mets pitching coach Jeremy Hefner.
âBraves hired Jeremy Hefner as pitching coach. Hefner, 39, spent past 6 seasons with Mets, who had MLB's 6th-best ERA in that span. They also hired Antoan Richardson, 42, as 1st-base coach. He spent past 2 seasons in that role with Mets and was also OF & baserunning instructor,â The Athleticâs David OâBrien wrote.
Nearly a month into the season, it appears the Braves may have pulled off a subtle âheistâ from the Mets by adding Hefner.

âWhen the Atlanta Braves let go of longtime pitching coach Rick Kranitz this past offseason, it came as a surprise to the fanbase. After seven successful seasons, Kranitz seemed like a coach the Braves would retain, even after Brian Snitker retired. However, when the Braves NL East rivals, the Mets, decided to let go of their pitching coach, Jeremy Hefner, the Braves felt they had couldn't miss the opportunity to bring the young pitching coach into the organization. The season is still young, but this is starting to look like just another long list of missteps for the Mets, and an even more unfortunate one, as it has directly benefited their biggest rival,â HTHBâs Mitchell Barbee wrote.
Comparing the two staffs, it is clear that New York is missing Hefner in their dugout. The Bravesâ pitching staff has looked nearly unhittable at times, a clear reflection of their coaching.
Atlanta is off to a strong start, while New York has lost 11 straight games. The Metsâ pitching staff has been inconsistent, something the Braves have largely avoided.
