Another series, another series win, and another chance for a Braves sweep. After winning a series with some late-inning heroics back in Atlanta and then letting the Tigers salvage the final game, the Braves have once again taken a series with the help of a roaring comeback and will go for another sweep on Sunday afternoon. This time, though, there’s an added twist: the Braves will be going for a sweep as Spencer Strider makes his 2026 debut.
At this point, Strider’s career has reached “saga” territory. After back-to-back dominant performances in 2022 and 2023, such that he looked like he was en route perennial Cy Young contention, he made just two starts in 2024 before missing the rest of the season with Tommy John Surgery and the associated recovery and build-up. Since then, it’s been anything but smooth sailing. Shortly after his 2025 debut, Strider went back on the shelf with a hamstring strain; his second start of 2025 ended up coming more than a month after his first. He then struggled for four starts before things clicked back into place and he reeled off a stellar eight-start stretch… only for things to fall apart again in his final ten outings of the year.
Though the hope was that more distance from his recovery and a normal offseason could help Strider get back on the proverbial horse again, things didn’t quite work out that way: he strained an oblique towards the end of Spring Training, was shut down for about three weeks, and has spent the last fortnight or so making rehab starts. But, now, he’s back, and will take the hill in Coors Field to begin his 2026 campaign.
If there’s any consolation to things aligning such that Strider’s debut has to come in a tough pitching environment, it’s that he’s really enjoyed facing the Rockies… mostly. Last year, his start against them in Atlanta was essentially the unfurling of a banner that read “He’s back! (temporarily)” as he put together a 13/1 K/BB ratio in six innings in his best start of the year and one of the best of his career. Back in 2022, he actually *did* have pretty much the best start of his career, as he carved up Rockies batters for 16 strikeouts with zero walks in eight innings. The caveat? His only start at Coors Field, which was the second big league start of his career, was kind of a mess, with five walks and five strikeouts in four innings. So, it’s a chance for Strider to start writing a new chapter of his saga, against an organization he’s largely dominated, but in a place that’s not exactly the friendliest of environments to get back to pitching. We’ll see what happens.
That Strider start back in 2022 at Coors came in a Strider-Kyle Freeland matchup. Incidentally, that’s the same matchup for this afternoon’s contest. The Braves won that one 6-2, with a big rally in extra innings after the teams played to a 1-1 tie in regulation and traded runs in the tenth. That said, has actually faced the Braves a bunch in the course of his career, including twice each in 2017, 2018, 2023 and 2024, and once each in 2019 and 2022. The Braves have generally gotten the upper hand in these matchups (7-3 in games started by Freeland), as he has a career 5.19 FIP and 4.70 xFIP against them in those ten outings — and the numbers are far worse at Coors Field (6.95 FIP, 5.18 xFIP).
Overall, the now 32-year-old’s career has been a bit of a strange roller coaster ride. A first-round pick of the Rockies back in 2014, he was highly productive in his first two seasons, though his peripherals were subpar. Since then, he’s largely pitched like a backend starter, but had a nice bit of improvement in 2025, with a 104/96/104 line (ERA-/FIP-/xFIP-) that was better than the 104/110/110 he managed collectively over the prior six seasons. In 2026, he’s at 74/94/102 over four starts, and has missed some time already with shoulder soreness. He had a couple of nice starts earlier against the Blue Jays and Astros before going down with injury (combined 11/2 K/BB ratio in 11 1/3 innings) but wasn’t quite as effective against the last week (4/1 K/BB ratio).
