Brazil beaten by Colombia, miss out on South American U17 final
Brazil’s Under-17 National Team was beaten 3-0 by Colombia on Thursday afternoon (16) in the semifinals of the South American Championship for the category, held in Paraguay. The match, played at Defensores del Chaco Stadium in Asunción, featured intense moments from the Canarinho, especially in the first half, but they were not enough to secure a place in the tournament final.
Brazil dominated the game in the first 45 minutes, created several chances, and imposed themselves against the Colombians. Eduardo Pape nearly opened the scoring early on with a close-range shot that went out past the end line. Shortly after, Eduardo Conceição tried twice to score. On both occasions, goalkeeper Luigi kept Colombia from conceding.
João Bezerra also had a chance, but once again Luigi denied him. The entire first half followed that pattern, with the Canarinho taking the initiative, moving the ball quickly, and showing strong tactical organization.
Another key moment of the half came in the 14th minute, when Samuel Almeida was brought down inside the box and the referee did not award a penalty.
In the second half, the match became more balanced. Then, in the 7th minute, Colombia made it 1-0 with a goal that should not have stood. Mosquera struck from outside the box, the ball hit the crossbar and bounced on the goal line. Peruvian referee Edwin Ordóñez, however, pointed to the center circle, much to the delight of the Colombians.
Brazil felt the blow, although they fought hard in search of an equalizer. But in the 21st minute, on a quick counterattack, Escorcia finished past Vitor to make it 2-0 to Colombia. Deep into stoppage time, from a free kick, Escorcia scored the third goal of the match.
The Canarinho will now play for third place on Sunday (19) against Uruguay.
