Brazil president Luiz InĂĄcio Lula da Silva confirmed this Tuesday that he spoke directly with Ancelotti about Neymarâs potential inclusion.
During a live broadcast on his YouTube channel, the 80-year-old politician explained how the topic came up in conversation with the national team coach.
âI had the chance to speak with Ancelotti, and he asked me: âDo you think Neymar should be called up?â I said: âLook, Ancelotti, if heâs physically fit, heâs got the football. What I need to know is whether he actually wants it.â
âIf he does, then he has to be professional. He can look at someone like Cristiano Ronaldo, he can look at Messi, and still go to the national team, because heâs not old yet. But he canât expect to go just on his name. He has to earn it on the pitch,â Lula concluded.
Neymar is expected to start as Santos face Recoleta in the Copa Sudamericana today.
The match could offer him a chance to build momentum against less demanding opposition and strengthen his case for selection.
At the same time, speculation over his future continues, with reports linking him to a potential move to MLS side FC Cincinnati.
Talks are believed to have started with his representatives, adding another layer of uncertainty to his situation.
