BREAKING: Blackhawks Sign GM Kyle Davidson To Multi-Year Contract Extension

Shortly before the season finale against the San Jose Sharks got underway at the United Center, Chicago Blackhawks chairman and CEO Danny Wirtz joined Chicago Sports Network’s pregame show to make a major announcement.

After singing general manager Kyle Davidson’s praises since taking over in March 2022, Wirtz also stated that he’s received a new contract extension. The organization remains committed to Davidson and wants him to continue the plan that he’s put into place.

Wirtz specifically mentioned the incredible work Davidson has done to restock the Blackhawks’ prospect pool, which was recently named the best in the NHL by The Athletic. While acknowledging that Davidson wasn’t hired to be just the prospect GM, Wirtz believes that he’s on the right track to building a championship-caliber team.

Here’s Wirtz’s official comments on Davidson’s extension in the team’s presser release:

“Kyle’s exceptional body of work to date has set us down the path of bringing sustainable, championship-caliber hockey back to Chicago. In a short amount of time, he’s rebuilt the team through strong drafting and player development, delivering a league-leading prospect pool and the beginnings of our future core. He, alongside Head Coach Jeff Blashill, has redefined our locker room’s culture and mentality, and we are seeing improvements in all of the underlying areas that make winning possible. We believe in Kyle’s vision for this team and remain fully committed to his plan to return the Blackhawks to the top of our sport.”

Per club policy, specific terms of Davidson’s new deal were not disclosed. However, the team announced it was a multi-year extension.

“I am extremely grateful for the support that Danny Wirtz has shown me these last four years, Davidson said in the team presser. “His commitment to our shared vision for the future of the Blackhawks has been vital to the success we’ve seen as we’ve worked to build our roster into a team that can compete for years to come. We still have lots of work to do as we strive to bring the Stanley Cup back to Chicago, and I’m excited to continue building a team that our fans can be proud of.”

Davidson, 37, is in the midst of his 16th season with the Blackhawks, and his fourth as general manager. Since being named the 10th GM in franchise history, he’s made 38 selections in the NHL Draft, including 11 first-round picks. Many of those first-rounders are now full-time professionals, such as Connor Bedard, Frank Nazar, Anton Frondell, Artyom Levshunov, Sam Rinzel, Kevin Korchinski, Oliver Moore, and Sacha Boisvert.

REACTION

Given the way the Blackhawks are finishing the 2025-26 regular season, with 13 losses in 16 games heading into the finale against San Jose, fans have grown increasingly frustrated with the lack of progress in Davidson’s rebuild. And it’s understandable. While the team was more competitive this year, particularly in the first half before Connor Bedard and Frank Nazar got injured, it’s still going to be another bottom-three finish in the league-wide standings when it’s all said and done.

Cracking the Stanley Cup Playoffs was always going to be a long shot, but the lack of meaningful games played over the final two months is somewhat concerning. While a fellow up-and-coming Western Conference team in the Sharks made an exciting run at snapping their long postseason drought, the Blackhawks didn’t come close to doing the same. There were plenty of comparisons between the two franchises heading into the year.

Despite the results not being there once again, the Blackhawks are certainly trending in the right direction, especially now that many of their high-end draft picks have joined the NHL roster. Looking forward, Bedard & Co. will have more help than ever in 2026-27… but will it finally be enough to make the team competitive?

Davidson’s biggest task in the upcoming offseason, aside from Bedard’s contract extension, is finding him a proper running mate to help him maximize his development AND production. Philipp Kurashev, Taylor Hall, Ryan Donato, and Andre Burakovsky have been his primary line mates through his first three NHL seasons, and that simply isn’t going to cut it if there’s going to be improvements next year.

While Frondell could perhaps create a formidable 1-2 punch with Bedard on the top line for years to come, it still feels like the top-six forward group would benefit from another experienced and legitimate option alongside them. The Burakovsky Experiment has been a downright disaster, and Teuvo Teravainen has been wildly inconsistent since rejoining the franchise. There must be veteran upgrades made for the Blackhawks to get where they want to be, and Davidson should hopefully recognize it.

Davidson has done a wonderful job at pooling a talented group of exciting young players, and because of that, he’s deserving of the extension. But there’s now going to be real pressure on his shoulders moving forward for the first time in his position, and it’s warranted. It’s time for the Blackhawks to become a better hockey team in 2026-27, as another finish near the bottom of the NHL standings would be completely unacceptable.

If Davidson and the Blackhawks don’t answer the bell next season, there will be many questioning the decision to extend him for multiple years. However, if there are significant improvements that both the fans and the franchise wish to see, the extension will be viewed much more positively.
