Breaking down Florida football's top performances from the Orange and Blue game
There was no shortage of big plays by Florida football during the Gators’ Orange and Blue game.
Although the day ended in a tie between the offense and defense, the first spring game under head coach Jon Sumrall featured eight plays that gained 20 or more yards, along with three turnovers.
“The defense started, fast offense finished the half strong, certain guys flashed,” Florida coach Jon Sumrall said. “Just moving a lot of pieces around secondary and the O-line is the reason for the format. But I think we got a lot better this spring. We have a long way to go, but we are pleased with the work we got today.”
Here’s a breakdown of some of the more memorable performances.
Wide receiver Micah Mays Jr.
The game’s MVP was arguably Wake Forest transfer Micah Mays Jr.
The receiver showed off his big play ability as he hauled in a pair of touchdowns from both of Florida’s potential starting quarterbacks.
Mays’ first touchdown was one of the most impressive as he became wide open on a deep route and scored on a 75-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tramell Jones Jr.
“It was a great ball by Tramell,” Mays said. “It was a slant and go. He put it up in the air, and I just had to go make that play.”
Later, near the end of the half, with Florida in a two-minute offense with Aaron Philo under center, Mays got open again and came down with a 23-yard touchdown.
“It was kind of like a switch route,” Mays said. “Read the coverage, broke in, he put it right over the safety. It was a good ball by him, put it right over the safety, and I had to make that play.”
Mays led Florida with 122 receiving yards from four catches on four targets.
“As a route runner, he's been explosive,” Sumrall said. “He tracks it well. He catches it clean. I've challenged him to play with a little bit more edge and physicality. That's the biggest challenge I've put on him, like, hey, it's not okay to just be like a guy that just catches the football. You've got to do the dirty work, too.
“He's grown in that area. I expect him to continue to grow, but I am really excited about having him on this roster.”
Wide receiver Eric Singleton Jr.
Singleton, who transferred in from Auburn, was one of the Gators’ top additions from the portal, and his impact was on full display during the spring game.
“It was great to see him out there in the Swamp doing it,” Mays said of Singleton. “He does it all the time in practice, so it was no shocker, but it was great to see him make a routine play like that.”
After a lackluster first quarter from UF’s offense, Singleton ignited the Gators by getting open for a 38-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jones.
Singleton also came up with a 25-yard catch to help set up Mays’ touchdown just before halftime. Singleton finished the day with six catches and 92 yards from eight targets.
“We got a lot of depth in the room, it’s great,” Mays said of the wide receiver room. “We can run a lot of different plays, formations. Put VB outside, put him in the slot. Dallas, like, we can all play anywhere, and it’s very versatile, so it’s going to be very exciting this fall season.”

Safety DJ Coleman
The top defensive play of the day belonged to safety DJ Coleman.
The Baylor transfer only tallied two tackles, but had one of the Gators’ three interceptions.
However, Coleman’s interception against Aaron Philo was as well-played as it can be, as he came up with a tip near the line of scrimmage.
“I was just lying in the box,” Coleman said. “I was ready to take the run. Then I just saw [Aaron] Philo looking straight at me, so I just sat there, and when he threw the ball, my instincts took over, and I jumped it and caught it.
“Those are big plays, momentum-shifting plays. In real games, we're going to need those to get the offense in great field position.”
The pick came with UF’s offense at its own 30-yard line, and he returned the pick for six yards.
“I thought DJ’s pick there was an incredible play,” said Florida defensive coordinator Brad White. “On an RPO glance to be able to make that play was really special. I thought the front did a nice job.”
It should also be noted that Coleman’s pick was a side effect of the overall strong performance from the defensive line, which accumulated five sacks by the end of the game.
Quarterback Tramell Jones. Jr.
In no way is this a designation of who should be winning the quarterback battle.
However, Tramell Jones Jr.’s final stat line in the spring game would have been a welcome sight last season.
Jones went 13-for-17 with 210 yards and two touchdowns. Jones made big plays and found multiple deep ball openings.
However, Jones’ deep ball touchdown to Mays was the highlight play of the day for the offense.
“The play was to beat two high, and then they ended up rolling down to one high,” Jones said. “I was like, now Micah is one-on-one. Give him a chance, give him a chance to make a play. Athletes make a play. Gave him a chance, he ran right under it, touchdown.”
Jones’ counterpart, Philo, also had a solid performance as he overcame a 6-for-11 start with two interceptions, finishing the day 21-for-28 with two touchdowns and 193 yards.
“Both guys have done some good things,” Sumrall said. “I think that room's done good things as a whole. I'll sit down with all those guys on Monday and have a really transparent conversation about, hey, after 15 practices, this is where we are.
“I won't make an announcement because we don't play here next week… they've earned honest conversations.”
