Brendan Sorsby may be a newcomer to the Texas Tech football team, but the senior quarterback was no first-timer at Jones AT&T Stadium on Friday, April 17.
Playing two years ago in Lubbock for Cincinnati, Sorsby threw for 426 yards, still his career high, and 4 touchdowns in a 44-41 Bearcats loss to the Red Raiders. In the Tech spring game on Friday, Sorsby passed for 4 more TDs in the team's last session of spring football.
"A lot less tortillas were thrown at me," he said, "but it was fun. It was good to be out there on the right side of the sideline, get the feet wet a little bit, throw a couple of touchdowns in the Jones and, hopefully, we can throw a few more in a few months."

Sorsby's TD passes were to Jett Carpenter for 3 yards in the first half and, in the second half, to Jalen Jones for 18 yards, to Donte Lee Jr. for 25 yards and to Micah Hudson for 8 yards, the latter on the last play of the scrimmage.
"It's kind of nice walking into a starting role and having the team already kind of respect you a little bit coming in," said Sorsby, who joined the team in January as one of the most coveted QBs in the transfer portal. "You've still got to get to know the guys and everything, but it's been really good."
Peyton Morgan intercepted a Sorsby throw for Hudson, and Brenden Jordan also picked off the new QB, but the latter was erased by a penalty on the defense. Defensive tackle Mateen Ibirogba tipped the pass that Morgan swiped.

In an era in which spring games are increasingly deemphasized and scaled back, so was this one. Sorsby's three second-half TD passes, for example, all came in red-zone work on possessions that started at the plus-25-yard line. Most of the 90-minute session was devoted to situational drills, and Tech defensive players were restricted to "thud" mode — limited contact with no to-the-ground tackling.
Their objective in that scenario?
"Just execution on the snap," linebacker Ben Roberts said. "Knowing your job. Making sure guys are where they're supposed to be and the effort that people play with getting to the ball. It's kind of a positive for us. You get to be in a little bit better shape because you've got to keep chasing the ball, because you can't get that TFL (tackle for loss)."
Tech coach Joey McGuire said he purposely scaled back on live tackling as this spring went along. He said he was swayed with a live-tackling practice early in spring. Two days later, he saw a statistic that Tech's defense was the national leader for tackles among returning players. And one of the team's two previous scrimmage dates coincided with the Tech coaches' clinic, and McGuire said visiting coaches would rather watch a practice than a scrimmage.
"I would say that the preparation on tackling was not less," said Roberts, who's spent his entire career with McGuire, "but there were less live periods and opportunities [than in years past]. That's just a health thing, but as long as we continue to get ourselves in the right position to make a tackle, you'll make the tackle."

Sorsby was the Cincinnati starter the past two years. In 2024, he passed for 2,813 yards and 18 touchdowns and rushed for 447 yards and 9 TDs. In 2025, he passed for 2,800 yards and 27 TDs and rushed for 580 yards and 9 TDs.
Though the defense can't hit him until real games next fall, it's apparent that Sorsby can be a weapon running the ball. Sorsby said he's not looking for contact, but at 6-foot-3 and 230-plus pounds, "I'm naturally a little heavier than a lot of guys. I'm able to withstand hits."
"The one thing with him — and he really didn't open up tonight — but he's a lot faster than what you think," McGuire said. "He really can run, and he's got really good movement. One thing he does well is he throws well on the run. He's pretty accurate whenever he's moving."
Jones, an 1,100-yard receiver last year at Alabama State, and Trey White, an edge defender with 19 1/2 sacks the past two years for San Diego State, earned McGuire's praise, as did Morgan for his interception. On the second series, Jones took a horizontal pass to the right, cut across the field and turned it into a 42-yard gain.
"Jalen Jones is a guy that everybody's really going to like playing that slot," McGuire said. "I thought Trey White throughout spring, but I thought Trey White had some plays today that he showed up."
The Red Raiders also made two field goals: a 46-yarder by Stephen F. Austin transfer Jacob Hand and a 57-yarder into a brisk south wind by Lou Groza Award semifinalist Stone Harrington.
