Sometimes, the baseball gods smile on teams in need. The Milwaukee Brewers definitely might have felt that way on Wednesday night as they beat the Toronto Blue Jays 2-1 at American Family Field.
In an eighth inning that might be replayed for a little bit, the Brewers got some luck on their side and that six-game losing streak is now a thing of the past.
Let's break it down a bit.
With the Blue Jays holding a 1-0 lead, Milwaukee's David Hamilton had an infield single that Toronto relief pitcher Tyler Rogers could not get to in time.
Sal Frelick came up and chopped the ball into the ground. As it bounded up into the air, Toronto catcher Brandon Valenzuela was waiting to see if the ball might roll foul. It turned out that the ball just hit the ground and stopped. Frelick reached first base and all Valenzuela could do is bend down and pick up the ball.
William Contreras came up and slithered a single to right that tied the game at 1-1.
Then, Brice Turang hit a chopper that went over Rogers' head. Frelick scored and that gave the Brewers a 2-1 lead.
Somehow, some way, the Brewers found a way to win.
Sometimes, all that is needed is a few lucky bounces of a baseball to make a losing streak go by the wayside.
After the game, Brewers manager Pat Murphy tried to be somewhat matter-of-fact about what he saw take place.
āI donāt know that weāre out of the funk weāre in,ā Murphy said, according to MLB.com. āIt just feels nice to win a ballgame and have the guys regain some belief.ā
Hamilton might have been thanking those baseball gods after the last out was made. āI donāt know if itās luck,ā Hamilton said, ābut it feels good to have some things go our way.ā
Blue Jays manager John Schneider seemed to have a heart for what Valenzuela went through on the field, but he also wondered if he could have made a play on Frelick's ball.
āIf we could do anything over, itās Valenzuela just getting the out there on Frelickās ball in front of the plate,ā Schneider said. āItās a young guy and thatās a learning play for him. You donāt really see it that much. ⦠You never know how the ball is going to spin.
"At that point, the dirtās a bit soft out there," Schneider said. "Know your runners. Youāve got Hamilton and Frelick who both run really well, so just come out and get your out.ā
Murphy was proud of what Frelick did on Wednesday night.
āI just know that Salās a battler, and I believe in him,ā Murphy said. āYou know, heās seldom hit as low as heās hitting now [Frelickās batting average sits at .179], but go figure, heās in the middle of it when we needed it most."
Milwaukee's Chad Patrick and Toronto's Dylan Cease were incredible for their teams. Patrick went 6 2/3 innings, gave up three hits, one earned run, and struck out two. Cease went six innings, gave up two hits, no earned runs, and struck out six.
Aaron Ashby picked up the win in relief for Milwaukee, raising his record to 4-0. Abner Uribe earned his first save this season. Rogers took the loss for the Blue Jays, falling to 1-1.
Milwaukee goes to 9-8 this season, sitting in fourth place in the National League Central Division. Toronto falls to 7-10, now in fourth place in the American League East Division.
The Brewers and Blue Jays will wrap up their series with a Thursday afternoon contest at American Family Field. First pitch is set for 1:40 p.m. ET (12:40 p.m. CT).
