The Denver Broncos' final pick in the NFL draft will be celebrated at 'Irrelevant Week' in June, a tradition honoring the last player selected, known as 'Mr. Irrelevant.' This event, started in 1976, takes place in Newport Beach, California.
Each year, the final player picked in the NFL draft is dubbed "Mr. Irrelevant."
It's a playful title, and while the player had to wait until the last pick to be selected, being dubbed "Mr. Irrelevant" does come with perks. Paul Salata launched "Irrelevant Week" in 1976 to celebrate the player, usually with celebrations in Newport Beach, California.
The Denver Broncos held each of the final two picks in this year's NFL draft, so they had to choose who went off the board at pick No. 256 and who would be dubbed "Mr. Irrelevant" at No. 257.
"We were just trying to decide who would be better to go to Newport Beach for these two," general manager George Paton said after the draft. "It’s cool. I think in my career, we’ve drafted two, and if I’m not mistaken, they both made it [onto the roster]. I’m not even sure what it all entails. I think, is it Newport Beach? Is there a parade?"
The Broncos ended up selecting tight end Dallen Bentley with the penultimate selection and linebacker Red Murdock with the last pick.
“When we talked to Bentley, he’s vice president, Mr. Irrelevant," coach Sean Payton said. "So if there’s anything that Murdock can’t handle, then the two of them [can]." Paton then suggested Irrelevant Week staff could fly both players to Newport Beach for the parade.

In an interview with the Denver Gazette's Chris Tomasson, Irrelevant Week CEO Melanie Salata Fitch said they're considering hosting the celebrations in Denver this summer.
“If the Broncos embrace the idea, then we’ll design it in Denver,” Fitch told Tomasson. “If the Broncos say they’d rather not, we’ll bring him to California.”
Stay tuned for more details on that, which are still to come. Regardless of whether it ends up being in Newport Beach or Denver, the Irrelevant Week festivities are expected to take place in June.
