The Denver Broncos went into the 2026 NFL Draft needing to find help at the tight end position.
After the free-agent signing of Evan Engram was a bit of a flop last season, at least in terms of production versus expectation, the Broncos' tight end spot was a glaring weakness. The team chose to sign Adam Trautman, Nate Adkins and Lucas Krull to new contracts this offseason, but it seemed crazy to go into the 2026 season with the exact same group as last year.
The Broncos added to the group, grabbing Justin Joly out of North Carolina State in the fifth round of the draft before selecting Utah's Dallen Bentley with the second-to-last pick in the seventh round. Bentley seemed like a steal at that spot and Joly presents terrific potential value.

But would the Broncos still consider bringing in a veteran option through free agency?
Jacob Infante of Pro Football Network feels that could be a possibility, as he predicts that former Cleveland Browns tight end David Njoku will land in Denver.
"The Browns struck gold with Harold Fannin Jr. in last year’s draft, so it’s no surprise David Njoku wasn’t brought back. It is a slight surprise he’s still a free agent, though; he ranked in the top ten among NFL tight ends in receptions every season from 2022 to 2024. He could still be a solid starter for a contending team.
2026 Predicted Team: Denver Broncos", wrote Infante*.*
This would be a bit of a surprise after the team used two draft picks on tight ends after re-signing three others to new contracts, but it's not the first time that the team has been connected to Njoku after it was announced that he and the Browns would part ways.
It is surprising that Njoku is still available, but he may just be taking his time in finding the right fit. That fit could be in Los Angeles, where he recently met with the Chargers. However, this report suggests that the Chicago Bears are the overwhelming favorites to land him.
Njoku is an accomplished veteran with nearly 400 career receptions and he would make for a great safety valve for Bo Nix in Denver. But the Broncos appear to be set at the tight end position following their moves this offseason, and the team is by no means throwing in the towel on Engram.
This move would have made sense before the draft, but after selecting Joly and Bentley, the Broncos look primed to move forward with a versatile group.
