Hines Ward, now an associate head coach at Arizona State, defends WR prospect Jordyn Tyson against toughness criticisms, highlighting his performance in a crucial game. Ward finds humor in the doubts expressed about Tyson's resilience, despite injuries being a concern.
Former NFL legend Hines Ward is now the associate head coach and wide receivers coach of the Arizona State Sun Devils. In that role, he has had a front-row seat to future first-round pick Jordyn Tyson's last two seasons.
On Tuesday, he was asked about Tyson and what he thinks of those who question Tyson's toughness. He went on an entire answer detailing what he has seen from Tyson and even went as far as explaining Tyson's final game and what he did to stay on the field with his "brothers." That game ended with Tyson leading the Sun Devils down the field to win the football game.
Ward says he "just laughs" at people when they question Tyson's toughness.
To be fair, I have not heard many people question Tyson's toughness. The biggest knock on Tyson is not the toughness; it is what got him to display those acts of toughness, his injuries.
Tyson is likely the most talented and skilled receiver that is available in this draft. He stands at 6'2", he is twitchy, he runs solid routes, and he is elite at contested catches. While a guy like Carnell Tate is a surgeon route runner, Tyson is more of an artistic route runner. He has an elite feel for defense, he finds holes, he floats, and makes big plays.
He finished last season with 61 catches for 711 yards and eight touchdowns to his name. This is after a 1,100-yard, 10-touchdown season in 2024 after tearing his ACL in 2023.
If he didn't have a laundry list of injury history, he would be being talked about as the first wide receiver off the board in next week's draft.
Now, the toughness part of his game, yes, that would fly in Cleveland if he became a Brown. Tyson has the tools to be a great NFL wide receiver, and honestly, the story of him in Cleveland being the Browns' number one wide receiver while his brother plays on the Cleveland Cavaliers would be awesome in and of itself.
Now, it would all be for naught if he couldn't stay healthy. As the saying goes, the best ability is availability, and he needs to prove his durability at the NFL level. One team is going to take a chance on him, and whatever team that is is going to get a guy who is tough as nails, who has been coached by Hines Ward, but is a major question mark with injuries.
Maybe that team will be the Cleveland Browns.
