The Bruins are frustrated with referees for allowing the Sabres to repeatedly hit goalie Jeremy Swayman during their playoff series. Coach Marco Sturm expressed hope for more penalties to be called in Game 3 to protect Swayman.
BOSTON ā From the beginning of the series, the Buffalo Sabres have tried to shake up Bruins goalie Jeremy Swayman.
Theyāve had constant traffic in front of the Boston net, either to screen him or to bump him and take away his vision or rhythm.
In Game 2, the Bruins didnāt like it and their pushback sparked a lot of the chippiness that defined the third period of that game.
Boston coach Marco Sturm hoped the officials would call penalties on some of those hits in Game 3.
āIt happened today again. Thatās one way they try to do. Theyāve been doing it the three games,ā he said. āSeems like they havenāt got a call yet. Iām waiting too. Itās obviously not in my control.ā
Mark Kastelic thought the referees cut off a large chunk of the game-within-the-game post-whistle jostling.
āObviously, we would love to play that way. I think the refs, at the beginning of the game, set the tone with one of the calls. Weāre trying to not go over the line and hurt our team by being in the penalty box,ā he said. āBut itās definitely hard because I think we thrive off of that. But weāre going to continue to try to just play on the edge.ā
Swayman said he canāt let himself get emotional.
āJust got to roll with it. ... Thatās not my job. My job is to stop the puck,ā he said. āA younger Sway would have reacted a little differently. Iām fortunate to have the experience under my belt. Emotions are going to fly, but understand, the next shift is coming and thatās all you can worry about.ā
The Bruins are frustrated because they believe the referees are not penalizing the Sabres for excessive hitting on goalie Jeremy Swayman.
The Sabres have been trying to disrupt Swayman by creating traffic in front of the net, either to screen him or to physically bump him.
Marco Sturm hoped that the officials would call penalties on the Sabres for their hits on Swayman to ensure his protection.
