NEW YORK â Yankees manager Aaron Boone held Ben Rice out of the lineup for Tuesdayâs series-opening, 7-4 win over the Rangers, marking the second straight absence for the bruised first baseman.
Rice suffered a left-hand contusion in Sundayâs game against the Orioles when he caught a third-inning pickoff throw from Max Fried. He exited the game a short while later after realizing that he couldnât get his best swing off. Rice, considered day-to-day, missed Mondayâs game for the same reason.
On Tuesday, Rice said that he was feeling better following some treatment, but he had yet to swing when he spoke to reporters. He planned on trying, though.
Asked what it would take for Rice to be available off the bench Tuesday, Boone said, âIf he starts doing some light hitting, and then can ramp it up even more and do the things he needs to do to be able to get a swing off, then weâd have a conversation. So weâll see how the next few hours are here.â
The Yankees hope to have Rice back in the lineup soon, as heâs been a âwrecking ball,â as Boone recently put it. Heading into Tuesdayâs game, he led the American League with a .343 average, and his 1.214 OPS paced the majors.
Rice also has 12 home runs and 27 RBI this season.
Even without Rice, the Yankees had no issues in the power department on Tuesday thanks to Ryan McMahon, Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Paul Goldschmidt. McMahon tied the game at 3 with a two-run homer off Jacob deGrom in the second inning, while Chisholm crushed a go-ahead solo shot off the ex-Mets ace in the sixth inning. Goldschmidt, playing first with Rice out, then hit a bases-empty blast off the left-handed in the eighth.

Cody Bellinger added an RBI double in the first frame and a two-run two-bagger in the seventh. The second double followed an intentional walk to Aaron Judge, which loaded the bases.
Meanwhile, closer David Bednar extinguished a one-out, bases-loaded threat in the eighth before allowing a meaningless run in the ninth.
With Carlos RodĂłn (elbow cleanup procedure/hamstring tightness) making his third rehab start at Triple-A on Tuesday, Boone said that he expects the leftyâs next outing to be with the Yankees. RodĂłn just had to get through Tuesdayâs game â which saw him total 6.1. innings, seven hits, five earned runs, two homers, two walks, four strikeouts and 83 pitches â and his between-start recovery without issue.
RodĂłn can take the rotation spot of Elmer RodrĂguez, who was erratic again in his second big league start on Tuesday.
Tasked with facing the same team he debuted against, the pitching prospect logged 4 2/3 innings, six hits, three earned runs, four walks, two strikeouts and 94 pitches against the Rangers. All three runs RodrĂguez surrendered came during a wild first inning that also included two free passes, a hit-by-pitch and a wild pitch.
Asked if Gerrit Cole (Tommy John surgery) would only need one more rehab start after his outing in Hudson Valley on Tuesday, Boone said, âI wouldnât say that. No, I donât know for sure, but I still think heâs a little bit aways away.â
Tuesday marked Coleâs fourth rehab start. He didnât put up the best line, tallying 4 1/3 innings, seven hits, five earned runs, two homers, zero walks and four strikeouts over 69 pitches.
Giancarlo Stanton (calf strain) hasnât started running yet, though he has begun hitting.
âIt still feels minor,â Boone said, âbut not ready to push it yet.â
