The Milwaukee Bucks are reconsidering trade options for Giannis Antetokounmpo, with co-owner Jimmy Haslam indicating a focus on the star's future. The Miami Heat may have a renewed opportunity to acquire him, especially with a potential lottery pick available in the upcoming NBA draft.
MIAMI â As if Sundayâs NBA draft lottery doesnât already offer ample potential twists, add another element to the equation for the Miami Heat â a potential trigger point for the Milwaukee Bucks re-opening for business on the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade front.
In the wake of renewed speculation since the end of Milwaukeeâs season a month ago, Bucks co-owner Jimmy Haslam turned subterfuge into substance this week when introducing Taylor Jenkins as his teamâs coach.
âWe will do whatâs best for Giannis and whatâs best for the organization,â Haslam said with the type of candor that largely had been missing from the process since the Bucks first fielded offers for the 10-time All-Star at the Feb. 5 NBA trade deadline. âWe donât know whether Giannis will stay with us or not.â
It was at the trade deadline when the Heatâs offer stood as the final offer the Bucks deliberated before pulling the two-time NBA Most Valuable Player from the market, the Heat package at the time centering on guard Tyler Herro, center Kelâel Ware, other young components and draft picks.
What the Heat could not offer at the time was a lottery pick in the June 23 first round of the NBA draft. Now, having failed to make the playoffs for the first time in seven seasons, that option now could be in play.
Enter Sundayâs 3 p.m. draft lottery, the random-but-weighted process that will determine the order of the first 14 selections.
Should the Heat move up to one of the first four picks that are determined by the drawing, they would be in possession of a trade chip previously not considered . . . or such a jump with 4.8% odds instead could have them moving off the pursuit of a player who turns 32 in December in favor of a youth movement.
The drawing also could hinder or even capsize potential Heat pursuit of Antetokounmpo if another suitor were to move up in the process, or, for that matter, if the Bucks would beat long odds of their own for top-four selection of their own.
Still, Haslamâs comments, from a typically button-downed Bucks front office, offered clarity that the door slammed shut on the Heat hours before the trade deadline now at least has cracked back open.
Jimmy Haslam stated that the Bucks will do whatâs best for Giannis and the organization, acknowledging uncertainty about his future with the team.
The Miami Heat may have a chance to acquire Giannis now that they could offer a lottery pick in the upcoming NBA draft, following their failure to make the playoffs.
The Heat's trade offer included guard Tyler Herro, center Kelâel Ware, other young players, and draft picks, but it was not enough to secure a deal before the trade deadline.
The NBA draft lottery is on June 23, and it is significant for the Heat as it may provide them with the opportunity to acquire a lottery pick, which could be crucial in pursuing Giannis.

Once teams are eliminated from the postseason, they immediately are eligible to resume the trade process for the first time since the February trade deadline, which now is the case for both the Heat and Bucks.
âI just think before the draft is a natural time,â Haslam said of a potential Antetokounmpo move. âBecause if Giannis does play somewhere else, weâve got to have a lot of assets.â
And thatâs where draft timing also comes into play for the Heat.
Technically, the Heat cannot trade this yearâs first-round pick, due to owning the Charlotte Hornets a first-round pick in either 2027 or â28, and the NBA rule prohibiting being without first-round picks in successive future drafts. However, the Heat can make a pick for the Bucks on June 23 and then flip that selection to Milwaukee.
Further, once this yearâs draft is complete, the Heat then can include their 2033 first-round pick in a potential trade package, with teams now allowed to trade first-round picks more than seven years out.
Unlike in February, when the Bucks still viewed themselves as potential postseason contenders under since-deposed coach Doc Rivers, an urgency has now entered the equation for the Bucks. While Antetokounmpo has two years and $121.2 million remaining on his contract, that includes a $62.7 million player option for 2027-28, effectively putting him on an expiring contract this coming season. Then there is the element of an extension window opening for Antetokounmpo in Milwaukee in October, with Haslamâs comments indicating a need to have such intention decided well in advance. If dealt, Antetokounmpo can sign a four-year, $275 million extension six months after being acquired, starting with a $76.1 million salary at age 35.
âIf heâs here, then you build the team differently,â said Haslam, also owner of the Cleveland Browns and MLS Columbus Crew.
Haslam said it was made clear to Jenkins there was no guarantee Antetokounmpo would be on the Bucksâ roster next season, telling the former Memphis Grizzlies coach, âListen, he may or may not be with us, so donât come because of that.â
As with the Heatâs overtures in February, a pursuit of Antetokounmpo will not come in a bubble, with the Bucks forward having indicated interest in a possible relocation to New York, and with Golden State, Houston, Boston, Portland, Orlando, Atlanta and other teams also considered potential trade partners and landing sites.
In that regard, the Knicks element could come down to the success of the mix already in place, with New York the lone team among the aforementioned pursuers still alive in the playoffs, with a 2-0 lead in the Eastern Conference semifinals over the Philadelphia 76ers.
For their part, a Heat package again likely would be built off a base of Herro, Ware, prospects and draft picks and draft swaps.
Unlike in February, the question is whether that even would get the Heat to the front of the line.
In the wake of postseason failures elsewhere, the competition could prove potentially overwhelming for Pat Riley, Andy Elisburg, Adam Simon and the rest of the Heat front office, particularly if the Celtics were to put Jaylen Brown into play, the Rockets to put Alperen Sengun into play, or the Magic to put Paolo Banchero into play.
Plus, because of the Heat owing the Hornets either a top-14 protected first-round pick in 2027 or an unprotected first-round pick in 2028, it has Heat first-round picks in 2027, â28 and â29 out of play, due to that rule preventing being without first-round picks in consecutive future seasons.
But what could bring the equation back in the Heatâs favor is if Antetokounmpo makes clear a preference of the Heat as a potential landing spot, with Haslam indicating a willingness to work out a preferred landing spot for the Greek big man.
âWeâll work through that with Giannis in the coming weeks,â Haslam said, with Antetokounmpo having been with the Bucks since he was selected at No. 15 in the 2013 NBA draft.
During a recent podcast with former Heat guard Goran Dragic, Antetokounmpo said, âHey, Miamiâs not a bad place, man. Beautiful, beautiful city, beautiful city. Beautiful city, believe it or not, believe it or not.â
