After a half season in Provo, former G-League big man Abdullah Ahmed is entering the transfer portal, he told Joe Tipton. He is the seventh BYU player to enter the portal.
Ahmed enrolled at BYU for Winter Semester and joined the team just before the start of Big 12 play. BYU had an extra roster spot after Nate Pickens was ruled out just before the season started, and BYU elected to use that roster spot on Ahmed. Ahmed chose BYU over Houston after visiting both schools in November.
Ahmed is 22 years old and the staff brough in Ahmed with the hope that heâd be the backup center to Keba and potentially take over once Keita graduated. Ahmed showed some flashes early with his shot-blocking ability, but ultimately never materialized close to what BYU had hoped. Ahmed brought little offensive game, was late on rotations, and didnât come through with big rebounds when needed. The 6-foot-10 big man did average 1.4 blocks in just 12 minutes per game action, and whatever place he ends up next will hope to capitalize on that.
With Keba graduated and Ahmed and Staton to the transfer portal, BYU is building its frontcourt from scratch and is seeking a starting center in the transfer portal.
