The Detroit Pistons finished the regular season as the top team in the Eastern Conference, winning 60 games. Cade Cunningham was central to that run, averaging 23.9 points, 5.5 rebounds and 9.9 assists.
His performances even placed him in the MVP conversation at times, as the guard carried a significant offensive load throughout the campaign.
However, that responsibility now appears to be taking a toll in the playoffs. Against the Orlando Magic, Cunningham’s influence remains high, but his efficiency has come under scrutiny.

Across the last three games of the series, Cunningham has recorded a total of 24 turnovers. According to Real App, that is the highest number ever in a three-game span in NBA playoff history.
The stat underlines the pressure he is facing as Detroit’s primary creator. With the ball in his hands so often, mistakes have become more frequent under playoff intensity.
Despite those issues, Cunningham has still been the leading scorer across the four games played so far. His output reflects both his quality and the lack of alternative scoring options within the roster.
The contrast highlights a broader concern for the Pistons. When Cunningham’s rhythm drops, there are limited players able to step up and share the burden.

As a result, he continues to operate as the focal point even during difficult stretches. That reliance has contributed to both his production and his struggles.
The situation has already sparked discussion about potential roster moves. Former NBA champion Jeff Teague suggested Detroit should target Kevin Durant.
Speaking on the Club 520 Podcast, he pointed to Detroit’s need for another scoring option.
“They are desperate for another scorer and Kevin Durant is still playing at a high level, that would take so much pressure off Cade,” Teague said.
Recent reports have indicated that there is a strong possibility Durant may not remain in Houston next season. That scenario could open the door for teams like Detroit.
