Cal Raleigh Day-to-Day with 'General Soreness,' Per Seattle Mariners Manager
SEATTLE — The Seattle Mariners suffered one of their most disappointing losses of the season Saturday at T-Mobile Park in Seattle.
Hours after the Mariners retired National Baseball Hall of Famer and legendary starting pitcher Randy Johnson's No. 51, the team fell 3-2 in extra innings to the Kansas City Royals.
Seattle's loss came despite a career-high 14 strikeouts over seven innings from starting pitchers Emerson Hancock, who finished his outing with 103 pitches, one earned run allowed on six hits and no free bases.
The Mariners' Saturday struggles came before Hancock threw his first pitch and before Johnson had his No. 51 join Ichiro Suzuki (No. 51), Edgar Martinez (No. 11), Ken Griffey Jr. (No. 24) and Jackie Robinson (No. 42) as the other retired numbers hanging in left-center field.
Seattle catcher and 2025 American League MVP finalist Cal Raleigh was a late scratch from the lineup. He was in the original starting lineup that released batting in his normal spot at No. 2.
In Raleigh's stead, usual backup Mitch Garver took over starting catcher responsibilities.
Following the late scratch, the Mariners recalled catcher Jhonny Pereda from the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers and placed infielder Will Wilson on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to April 30) with a fractured left thumb.
Being day-to-day indicates that Cal Raleigh's availability for upcoming games is uncertain and will depend on his recovery from soreness.
The Seattle Mariners lost 3-2 in extra innings to the Kansas City Royals, despite a strong pitching performance from Emerson Hancock.
Emerson Hancock is a starting pitcher for the Seattle Mariners, and he achieved a career-high 14 strikeouts over seven innings in the recent game.
