Mentioned in this story
Apr. 16—Carl Fruechte was on the sideline for all of the Caledonia football program's 71-game winning streak.
He was there when it ended, too, in September of 2021.
He speaks equally fondly of his teams that won state championships and his (rare) teams that finished below .500.
"We've never had a bad year," Fruechte told the Post Bulletin after the Warriors defeated Rochester Lourdes last October to win the Section 1, Class 2A championship. "We just enjoy being with our young people.
"We just ... we think we have great kids; I think all of southeastern Minnesota has great kids. There are a lot of special kids in this area and we like getting to be with them for another week. ... The world's crazy, you know? And when you get to be with good young people like this, you want to hang onto it."
It's that feeling and philosophy that has kept Fruechte going.
And it's that love of his players that has earned him more state-wide recognition.
Fruechte, the Warriors' head coach, has been named the 2026 recipient of the John Gagliardi Legacy Award by the Minnesota Chapter of the National Football Foundation.
Fruechte will be honored on Sunday, April 19, during a private awards event at Huntington Bank Stadium on the University of Minnesota campus. The event will be recorded for the Minnesota Football Honors show, airing later this summer on YouTube and social media, with full broadcast details coming soon.
"Carl Fruechte has so much respect and admiration across the entire Minnesota High School football community. He develops athletes into not just great players, but excellent future citizens and community leaders," said Todd Fultz, President of the Minnesota Chapter of the National Football Foundation. "We can't wait to honor Carl during the upcoming Minnesota Football Honors broadcast."
Fruechte's Warriors had a 9-3 season in 2025, when they went 6-2 in the regular season, then rattled off wins against St. Charles, Triton and Rochester Lourdes to reach the Class 2A state tournament.
Fruechte, a 1984 graduate of Caledonia High School, has coached football at the school since 1988. He currently holds a career coaching record of 206-46. He was Caledonia's head coach from 1997 to 2009 and resumed the role in 2016 (to present). From 2010-2015, he served as the Warriors' offensive coordinator while his children were playing college athletics.
Under Fruechte's guidance, Caledonia put together a 71-game winning streak that started with the 2015 season opener, a 55-7 win against La Crescent-Hokah, and ran through the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, when the Warriors played just three games. The streak was snapped in the 2021 season opener, when Caledonia fell 30-13 at Lake City. The streak included five consecutive section and state championships.
Fruechte has won eight conference titles, 10 section championships and six state championships during his career. Collectively, he has been part of 10 total football state championships as a head coach or assistant. Fruechte has been named Conference and Section Coach of the Year eight times each. He also earned Minnesota Football Coaches Association Coach of the Year honors three times and was named State Coach of the Year in 2008. Fruechte was inducted into the Minnesota Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2024.
Carl Fruechte is receiving a prestigious award, although the specific name of the award is not mentioned in the excerpt.
Carl Fruechte was the coach for the entire duration of Caledonia's 71-game winning streak.
Under Carl Fruechte, the Caledonia football team won state championships and had no bad years, even finishing below .500 on rare occasions.
Carl Fruechte values the opportunity to work with young people and believes there are many special kids in southeastern Minnesota.
