Golf fans were introduced to the world's toughest cameraman Saturday.
Canadian PGA Tour pro Mackenzie Hughes hooked his tee shot on the par-3 13th at Quail Hollow Club during the third round of the 2026 Truist Championship — the ball starting at the middle of the green and snapping to the left as Hughes yelled "fore!" Unfortunately, a cameraman standing near the green did not heed the warning, and the ball plummeted toward the ground, bounced right off his head and caromed back onto the green. The sound it made is one nobody wants to hear.
"Ahh, camera guy took it straight to the melon," an announcer remarked with an audible wince on the PGA Tour Live broadcast.
The cameraman, whose name is Gary according to the commentators, somehow stayed on his feet and seemed to simply shake it off. As soon as Hughes started toward the green, he made a beeline straight for Gary, shook his hand, gave him a signed glove and asked if he was alright.
"I'm good," he replied.
The assist from Gary's head paid off for Hughes, as he went on to two-putt for par after a tee shot that was going to end up well off the green if it weren't for the painful redirection. Still, Hughes finished the third round in 2-over 73 and sat in a tie for dead last at 6 over when he signed his scorecard Saturday afternoon.
This is the second week in a row in which someone has been hit by a ball on the fly at a PGA Tour event. Last Saturday, Nick Taylor, another Canadian pro, sliced a drive at the Cadillac Championship and his ball pelted a fan on the arm without a bounce to take the sting off. That fan also seemed to be just fine, though, as he laughed and pointed to the camera.
These incidents serve as an opportunity to remind everyone, if you're in the gallery at a golf tournament, always keep your head on a swivel. You never know when an errant shot might be headed in your direction.
