The Los Angeles Sparks and Indiana Fever faced off on Wednesday night in a clash of two of the biggest stars in the WNBA’s draft class: Caitlin Clark and Cameron Brink, the first and second overall picks, respectively.
Clark and the Fever got the upper hand on the evening, leaving Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles with an 87-78 victory. Although Clark had a solid outing, scoring 24 points and adding nine assists, Brink got the better of her in a possession in the first half, and wasn’t shy about letting Clark know.
In fact, Brink’s trash talk afterward was her way of letting the entire arena know. It was an impressive individual showing for Brink in all facets, after being challenged by her coach to produce after a disappointing season opener.
“I mean, we need Cam to produce. We need Cam to bring that defensive energy,” head coach Lynne Roberts said. “We have so much confidence and belief in her. She’s got to get out on the floor with some confidence and do what she’s capable of doing. But we’re going to need her.”
Brink responded with 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting, five rebounds, and three blocks in just 19 minutes of action. Concerns about the 2024 draft class may be warranted for the time being, but if Brink can continue to produce like she did on Wednesday night she may be the first player in the class to realize her full potential.
