Chad Brown is entering Emerging Market in the Kentucky Derby, despite the horse's limited racing experience. Brown, a two-time Preakness winner, expresses confidence in his undefeated colt's potential to make history.
Mentioned in this story
Chad Brown isnât one to suffer from âKentucky Derby Fever.â
To wit, heâs twice won the Preakness â Cloud Computing in 2017 and Early Voting in 2022 â with horses who had qualified for the Kentucky Derby but skipped it.
So it may come as a surprise to see Brown in this yearâs Kentucky Derby with a horse, Emerging Market, who has raced just twice in his career.
Or maybe itâs a sign of Brownâs confidence in his undefeated colt.
âIâve been beaten in this race by horses that werenât nearly as good as Emerging Market, plain and simple,â Brown said. âTheyâre not this caliber. So why sit out when thereâs a chance another long shot can win?â
Emerging Market may not have the extensive rĂ©sumĂ© of a Renegade or Commandment or Further Ado, but he shouldnât be overlooked for the Kentucky Derby on May 2 at Churchill Downs â even if history is against him.
Only one horse ever has won the Kentucky Derby after entering the race with just two career starts, and you have to go back to 1883 (Leonatus) to find him.
Chad Brown has previously won the Preakness Stakes twice but has not won the Kentucky Derby.
Emerging Market has raced just twice in his career prior to the Kentucky Derby.
Chad Brown believes Emerging Market is of higher caliber than horses that have previously beaten him in the Derby.
Brown chose to enter Emerging Market because he sees a chance for a long shot to win, given the horse's quality.

Since 1937 â the first year complete records are available on the topic â only six horses have even tried the Kentucky Derby off two career starts. The most recent was Japanâs T O Password in 2024. He finished fifth.
âWhen they say stuff hasnât been done in so long, sooner or later it will be done,â Brown said. âSo why not it be this horse, our team? I feel like thereâs so many obstacles to get through to get to the winnerâs circle ⊠that the âonly two startsâ is very low on my list, actually.â
2026 Kentucky Derby horse Emerging Market works at Churchill Downs. The horse is trained by Chad Brown and has earned $600,000 so far in his career. The three-year-old is 2-for-2 in races, with both run on fast dirt. April 21, 2026
While Emerging Market is lightly raced, Brown noted heâs had ample training â if not some bad luck â since he was a 2-year-old.
He was headed toward a racing debut at Saratoga in the summer before suffering a cut in his stall, taking him out of training for a few weeks. In the fall, Emerging Market battled pneumonia and didnât record a workout for 2œ months.
âIt was a rough year for my 2-year-olds last year,â Brown said. âA lot of them were sick.â
Emerging Market finally got to the starting gate Feb. 7 at Tampa Bay Downs and won. Brown didnât hesitate to throw him straight into stakes company, and Emerging Market shined with a victory in the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby on March 21, beating Pavlovian by a head and earning a spot in the Kentucky Derby.
âHe fought hard,â jockey Flavian Prat said. âIt was a good run, very professional. Honestly, when I turned for home I thought I would win easily, but Pavlovian gave us a good challenge.â

Brown wasnât surprised.
âHe just confirmed how he trained,â Brown said. âThe horse trained liked he was way above average, to put it mildly. The horse has always acted like he was in a different league. âŠ
âIf I think theyâre that good, I jump them right up. This horse doesnât need to go through conditions.â
A son of Candy Ride, Emerging Market was purchased for Klaravich Stables for $185,000 at the 2024 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

History may be against Emerging Market, but Brown believes he has a solid chance at his first Kentucky Derby victory.
âIt would be nice to have four or five races under your belt minimum going into a race like the Derby,â Brown said. âHeâs going to have to make up for it with just raw ability. Maybe heâs fresh and doesnât have a lot of wear and tear on him. I guess thatâs the benefit. âŠ
âHe has a good turn of foot for a dirt horse. He has gears. If he gets a good pace in front of him and some smart horses to track, I think heâs a horse who can come with a fast last quarter.â
