The Canadian national team has suffered a major blow just over a month away from kick-off at the FIFA World Cup, with team captain Alphonso Davies having suffered yet another injury.
The 25-year-old has endured an injury-riddled season with Bayern Munich, with his most recent, and last, outing for Vincent Kompany’s side this campaign having come in the UEFA Champions League semi-final, where he came on as a second-half substitute en route to a 6-5 aggregate defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.
In a statement released on Friday, Bayern revealed, “Alphonso Davies suffered a muscle injury in his left hamstring during Wednesday’s Champions League semi-final second leg against Paris Saint-Germain, as confirmed by an examination by the FC Bayern medical unit. The Canada international will therefore be out of action for several weeks.”

Davies' injury is a significant setback for Canada, as he is the team's captain and a key player.
The FIFA World Cup is set to kick off in just over a month from now.

This means Davies will miss the final three Bundesliga games of the season, with Bayern having already been crowned champions.
As for the upcoming World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Canada, the U.S., and Mexico, it remains unclear how this might affect Davies’ availability.
Jesse Marsch’s side is set to warm up for the World Cup with friendlies against Uzbekistan on June 1 and Ireland on June 5. The first will be held at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, while the latter will take place at Stade Saputo in Montreal.
Having been drawn into Group B, Canada will then kick off its campaign for the crown on June 12, a day after the opener in Mexico City between El Tri and South Africa, against Bosnia and Herzegovina at BMO Field in Toronto.
A trip to BC Place in Vancouver follows six days later to take on Qatar, before their group stage concludes on June 24 against Switzerland, again in Vancouver.
Should they make it through to the newly implemented Round of 32, brought in to accommodate the tournament’s expansion from 36 to 48 teams, it would mark the first time the nation has ever made it to the knockout rounds.
Canada has only reached the World Cup twice before, failing to make it out of the group in Qatar four years ago and back in 1986 in Mexico.
If Davies is unable to start the tournament, Richie Laryea of Toronto FC seems the most likely candidate to take his spot at left back, having done just that in both legs of the CONCACAF Nations League quarter finals against Suriname in November 2024 - the last games Davies did not start.
In a recent interview on the ‘Call It What You Want’ podcast, Marsch highlighted Laryea as one of the players he felt had improved most since he took over in May 2024. Along with Laryea, he also praised Niko Sigur of Hajduk Split and Sassuolo’s Ismaël Koné.
It was his praise of Koné that Marsch delved into the most, taking the opportunity to lay into current Tottenham Hotspur boss Roberto De Zerbi in the process, calling him “a real, real a—---” regarding his alleged treatment of the midfielder during their brief time together at Marseille.
