Canada captain Alphonso Davies has suffered a hamstring injury that will sideline him for âseveral weeksâ, Bayern Munich said on Friday, potentially disrupting his World Cup preparations.
Davies was injured in Wednesdayâs 1-1 draw in the second leg of the Champions League semi-final against holders Paris Saint-Germain, who beat Bayern 6-5 on aggregate.
The 25-year-old full-back is unlikely to play again for Bayern this season and could face a race against time to be ready for the start of the World Cup. Co-hosts Canada play Bosnia and Herzegovina in their opening match on 12 June in Toronto.
Canada Soccer said it is in âclose contactâ with Davies and is keeping in touch with Bayernâs medical team.
âOur focus is on supporting his recovery and providing every available resource, including specialized soft tissue expertise, to give him the best possible pathway back to full fitness ahead of the FIFA World Cup,â the federation said in a statement.
It is the latest setback for Davies, who has suffered a series of muscle injuries after returning from an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear that kept him out eight months.
Davies suffered that ACL injury on international duty with Canada in the Concacaf Nations League third-place playoff last March. Daviesâs agent issued a statement blaming Canada Soccer for starting him in that game, while Bayern later accused the federation of being âgrossly negligentâ and not providing Davies with proper care by playing him in a âmatch of no sporting significanceâ given a run of muscle issues before the game.
Davies has scored 15 goals in 58 career caps with Canada, including the countryâs first-ever goal at a World Cup at Qatar 2022. He has not appeared for the national team since the Nations League game in March 2025 and was ruled out of their most recent camp with a different hamstring injury. Jesse Marsch is expected to release his World Cup roster later this month before a pair of friendlies against Uzbekistan on 1 June and Ireland on 5 June.
Alphonso Davies is expected to be sidelined for several weeks due to his hamstring injury.
Canada's first match in the World Cup 2026 is scheduled for June 12 against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto.
Canada Soccer is in close contact with Davies and Bayern Munich's medical team to support his recovery and provide specialized resources.
