Rangers' heart questioned as title hopes all but ended at Tynecastle
Rangers' title aspirations fade with a 2-1 defeat to Hearts at Tynecastle.
Tomasz Skublak, a forward for Inter Toronto, celebrated his goal against Atlético Ottawa by flashing his real estate business card to the camera. He balances his soccer career with a full-time job as a real estate agent in the greater Toronto area.
There is no moment in soccer that draws everyone's attention like a goal celebration. Everyone in the stadium just saw the finish and is waiting to see what the player will do. Tomasz Skublak knew that and decided to take advantage.
The Inter Toronto forward scored from a half-volley in the 50th minute of a match with Atlético Ottawa. With the spotlight on, he pulled off his gloves, grabbed his business card out of his sock and flashed his digits at the broadcast camera, gesturing for potential clients to call him.
In addition to scoring goals, Skublak works as a real estate agent in the greater Toronto area, a job he had to take on as he pushed to make it in professional soccer.
"I’m playing here at Inter Toronto full-time as well as being a full-time real estate agent," he told the broadcast after the game. "So, I pulled out the business card, get some free advertising going, put my name out there. If anyone needs a house sold or bought, just reach out. More than happy to help – whether it’s on the pitch or off the pitch, I tend to do the job right."
While Skublak now is a full-time soccer player, he had a long journey that required him to have a backup plan. After playing for the University of South Florida, the Ontario native returned to his home province and played semi-pro until signing with the CanPL's HFX Wanderers in 2019. After moving to Armenia and Germany in search of top-division minutes, he returned to North America where he again played for semi-pro clubs until he signed a one-year deal with Inter Toronto, formerly known as York United FC, this year.
The decision has worked out for Inter Toronto. Skublak scored a second goal in the win over Ottawa and is now tied as the club's top scorer with three goals in four matches during the young campaign.
